Community Conversation on Immigration
Monday, November 12, 7-9PM
Forest Grove United Church of Christ
(2032 College Way)
WHY: People have legitimate questions about
immigration and its many related issues, but we are
not always able to get to the root of our concerns and
doubts. We have access to different information, but
share common values of basic fairness and justice.
Meanwhile, immigration is being used as a divisive
political wedge nationally. Many local efforts are
popping up that do nothing to address root causes, but
instead scapegoat immigrants and manipulate racial
fears. This Community Conversation is a chance to
gather the tools, information, and support to organize
for human rights and fairness.
WHAT: The West County Council for Human Dignity and
the Rural Organizing Project have invited a civil
rights strategist from Northwest Workers' Justice
Project to lead this community conversation, with the
intent of training local leaders to lead similar
conversations. We will take a few minutes to
introduce ourselves and then we will dive right in to
a discussion of what we hear in our communities and in
the media about immigration. Participants will have a
chance to ask questions that they might have been too
timid or fearful to ask elsewhere and the audience and
facilitator will have a chance to respond anecdotally
and share research that addresses these points. The
conversation will close with suggestions for
continuing these conversations locally.
Sponsored by West County Council for Human Dignity,
Rural Organizing Project,
Northwest Workers' Justice Project,
United Church of Christ Latino Ministry Project.
