If I remember correctly 'freedom' fries came about because early in
the war on terror, France thought that the US invading Iraq was a
mistake. A congressman thought the French weren't being supportive
enough of our policies so he wanted to punish them and banished the
word 'French' from the congressional cafeteria through an act of
Congress (among other attempts to prove how patriotic congress people
are).
It sure taught France a lesson....
