Spam is a huge problem. Some estimates put spam at 80% of all email
traffic. It's a HUGE waste of resources and causes disruption of the
delivery of real mail. Why is so much effort put in to sending this junk
by spammers? A recently convicted spammer has answered the question.
He made $100,000.00 a month from spam! Why would anyone buy anything
advertised by a spammer? To get cheap illegally copied software, drugs
they couldn't otherwise get, and because people are gullible. Besides
the illegality, buying pirated software has the risk of infecting your
system with a virus. Buying stuff through spammers encourages spammers.

Spam is pervasive. Every system running a mail server should be running
spam filters. If you post a message to grovenet, it may never even
reach the grovenet mailman software. It may be blocked by your internet
service provider as spam before it gets to the greater internet.

It's even possible, if you haven't taken the steps to protect your
computer, that you are involved in relaying spam. Your system could be
what is called a zombie. See this article for more info.
