Hi Cindy,
The basic problem is that right or wrong, there are many third party companies (insurance) that require use of you SSN. They are like a big dog and they do push their weight around. I have felt vulnerable for years because as a dentist my social security number has been on hundreds of insurance forms for my patients for years. There is no way I have any anonymity from big brother. I think about the only way you can be sure that a new medical provider does not get your SSN is to offer to pay cash for the full amount the day of business and deal with the insurance claims yourself.
