[Grovenet] Social Security Number Question

When I bought my home and also when I purchased my last car they required me to supply them with my SSN.
What I had always understood was that your social security number was never suppose to be used for anything other than social security.
I believe that is why insurance companies are no longer using your SSN as your account number.
I also believe that is why there was a big push to create a TIN (taxable identification number). Even though it was the exact same number as the SSN it was not technically called your SSN, it was your TIN.
I have reached a point where so many people insist on having your SSN now that it's not worth fighting it. I recently helped someone fill out a job application for Fred Meyers and they required it. Also at Fred Meyers they use to have a sign posted that claimed if you wanted a hunting or a fishing license you had to provide your SSN.
Is it a big deal? I no longer know.

Hi Cindy,
The basic problem is that right or wrong, there are many third party companies
(insurance) that require use of you SSN. They are like a big dog and they do
push their weight around. I have felt vulnerable for years because as a dentist
my social security number has been on hundreds of insurance forms for my
patients for years. There is no way I have any anonymity from big brother. I
think about the only way you can be sure that a new medical provider does not
get your SSN is to offer to pay cash for the full amount the day of business
and deal with the insurance claims yourself.
