[Grovenet] Policing in the Grove + Cost of Obesity

Steven,
Concerning your note to Richard, "And a note for Richard. That post shows you're quite the politician. No one commented on the meth. So it appears that, like most politicians, you'll do what you want without regard for outside comment", I believe you owe Richard an apology. Katie Allnutt did indeed comment on meth yesterday: "I have been fortunate in that my family has not been touched by the meth epidemic but I know there are many houses and neighbors here in FG that have been. Obviously the new law that takes the active ingredients off the store shelves has helped but it still seems to lead to many property crimes and the heartbreaking abandonment of small children (or not so small children) by parents who are addicted. This is probably an area that will require constant attention."
I also disagree with your assertion that obesity = shorter life = less money paid. On the contrary, complications from obesity are an incredible drain in so many areas: http://www.forbes.com/2006/07/19/obesity-fat-costs_cx_mh_0720obesity.html
I'll also offer the decrease in cost proof in the form of my family. My wife is a Certified Nutritional Therapist, obtaining her Certification almost a year ago. In the past 2 years, based on her learnings and training to become Certified, we've dramatically changed the food intake for our entire family, which includes 3 teenage sons. We've always been exercise-minded, my wife leading the way in that department with her now 30-year record of running every single day. But our overall health has improved to the point where in the last 2 years, the only prescription care we've needed is for antibiotics twice. Doctor visits? Besides yearly checkups for the missus and I (aah the joys of being over 40) and physicals for sports activities, we regularly receive chiropractic care. Hospital visits? Once for my son who suffered a deep wound and needed urgent care/stitches.
Each of our boys have only missed a couple of school days each year and I've not missed any work time because of illness.
The increase we've seen is with food costs. Eating healthy is more expensive as the cost of organic/non-GMO/non-hormone/non-antiobitic products is definitely more. But that is a direct burden on us, not our insurance provider or my employer or those we come in contact with who could get ill from us. And more importantly, the higher cost of eating right is definitely less than the actual cost associated with being sick: regular doctor visits, regular trips to the pharmacy for expensive pharmaceuticals that only treat the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem, and work loss/productivity.
Not all people who maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen are necessarily in good health. Not all obese people are necessarily in bad health. But the data clearly shows that over time, caring for complications arising from obesity is costly.

Coburn.
I don't know about FG. Just noticed more officers doing traffic stops since
we got our own court.
And a note for Richard. That post shows you're quite the politician. No one
commented on the meth. So it appears that, like most politicians, you'll do
what you want without regard for outside comment.
