I have been using Avira Antivir for years.  www.free-av.com

As for the why - it has always been free, it has worked where Norton or 
McAfee has not, it does not slow down the computer - unlike Norton or 
McAfee, and in short - it has always just worked and never failed me.

However Avira only works with Win2000, XP, or Vista.  There used to be 
an older version that worked on Win98
and WinME but they removed it.

If you need something to work on Win98 or WinMe, then I have to 
recommend AVG.
