"1848" was following the plan...The War of 1812 began battle about a month before word reached the American troops that there was a War. Needless to say the group attacked by the British were somewhat surprised.
Then the great Battle of New Orleans, which created such a fine song, was fought about a month after 'the powers that be' had come to agreement to end the War. Unfortunately neither side had heard the news as yet. (The win was credited with making for a stronger side for the Americans when concessions were discussed so perhaps it was not so unfortunate for our side.)
It was not easy to get those instant messages thru in those days.
