Yep! Ruralite published that story when I worked there. The guy,
Remme, was a cattleman, had sold his herd and was planning more
purchases when he got the bad news. He rode day and night, evading
Indians and highwaymen, and staggered into the Portland branch of the
bank just as the passenger ship was docking. After collecting his
money from the local manager, he tried to give the man a friendly
warning: "Just so you know, your bank has gone bust, and your San
Francisco officer will be here any minute with the news."
"Nonsense!" said the manager, "This is the strongest bank on the coast."
Half an hour later he was probably looking for a new job, while
Remme's further exploits are unknown to me.

>I love those old stories.
>One I read in a little plaque in SanFran. A man deposited $30k in a bank.
>Within minutes the bank closed, it had gone under. He went to the docks to
>rush to Portland where there another branch of the bank. At the docks he saw
>an executive of the bank getting on a ship to head to Portland. His only
>hope was to beat him to Portland.
>He road day and night, buying fresh horses along the way. Beat the boat by
>only minutes. Got his money out of the bank just before it was closed.
>Created the fastest overland speed from the bay area to PDX.
