 A friend writes from Florida:

"Tonight it feels like 1959 again.  I am hopeful and proud of my fellow voters.  I feel as though we have redeemed ourselves in the eyes of the world.  I looked at the faces of young people watching Obama’s speech in Chicago and recalled my own hopeful moments when Kennedy was elected.  I relived those moments for myself, and envied the young of this country their passion and optimism.

My personal interpretation of Obama’s popularity is a repudiation of fear.  I feel the youth of America have come to the opinion that we cannot live in fear of attack, in fear of the “other.”  It appears to me that they do not buy into the idea that there is only one right way to live.

America began as a place where people of different beliefs coexisted.  It is about time we again recognize that it is our ability to embrace the differences that makes us stronger!"
