Apparently they walked into the police line surrounding the debate
entrance-- after first giving a weeks' advance notice that they would
do so, unless two of their members would be permitted to attend the
event. They had been assured by authorities that the police would
respond to nonviolent civil disobedience with "restraint." By
"restraint," perhaps they meant they would not actually fire on the
marchers, or club everyone within reach bloody and unconscious.
David, you are right, civil disobedience does carry personal costs,
which any protestor with sincere convictions should be willing to
pay. Conversely, civil government derives its authority from the
consent of the governed. When it descends to brute force to enforce
its will upon nonviolent citizens, it becomes mere tyranny.
