My kids have been involved with Theatre in the Grove for over five years. I have asked the same questions as you as to why more people don't take advantage of such a rewarding entertainment/learning opportunity, whether it's in the audience, working backstage or onstage. I know It's hard for a small nonprofit to devote limited resources to marketing and grant writing, so most people come across TITG through word-of-mouth. My family tries to spread the word about the Theatre, and the people we have introduced to TITG are always surprised at how much they enjoy live theater, and they tend to return again and again. I always warn them that once they become dedicated theater patrons, they may start to notice that the acting on tv pales in comparison to stage acting and becomes difficult to watch.
So I always urge people to do the same as we do--spread the word and help support community theater!

I have bee really impressed being involved with the Theater in the Grove this past few months with my kids. This latest production is no exception, and to be clear it is for all ages. There are evening performances this weekend and many performances during the day this week and next. To be clear, it isn't just for kids!
I think we are truly blessed to have something like this in our community, that seems like it is a remnant from a bygone era. It is funny I asked at my daughter's school why they weren't going to it as classes in general, and a woman at the office mentioned the cost. Five bucks a person.
This is kind of strange to me, because what else would even cost that little. Movies cost more, the Zoo costs more, etc. This is live theater that might be the kids' only experience with it since their parents might be even more likely to feel this way.
I get kind of a feeling of dread about TITG in general because I don't want it to go the way of other community theater. Right now productions are really of quality and there certainly is enough local talent to keep them floating, but for a five dollar ticket to seem expensive when no one is even getting paid for their time makes it seem like I am not sure what the future might be like.
Obviously doing community theater is not where even self-sustaining funds can be found, even though a lot of our kids are obviously wanting chances to act in things like this. I would certainly rather them participate in something like this even in the chorus than just 'hang out' which kids do a lot of these days, or video games, or texting friends, etc.
Anyway, if any of you share the same feeling about having a community theater, the evening/weekend performances are this coming weekend and any of you that have days off or are involved in homeschooling, etc. might want to look into the daytime performances. Even if you can't go could you forward to any community emailing that you might be invoved in?
