Your parable may boil down to this:
Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor -  
and we get to choose which one we like better.

The potential VP's vision includes burning oil as fast as possible  
(burning asphalt)
The potential VP's vision includes criminalizing abortions (near a  
prison)
McCain is known for playing craps and he 'rolled the dice' to pick  
Palin (near a casino)
McCain said in his speech that our government has been broken (no  
functioning accessory function)
We are all waiting anxiously to see who is the next president and  
there will be a few days of no acitivity before the air waves are  
filled beyond belief with ads. (idling the engine)
Whether you are on the right or the left, there is the feeling that  
if the 'wrong' person is the next POTUS it will be the end of the  
country as we know it (sitting in the failing light).
Etc.

Thanks for the story, it is appropriate for our times.
