Yes, and it is reasonable to expect that if your spouse was getting  
the nomination for President of the United States, you would show up  
dressed as you would to represent the US as you entertain foreign  
dignitaries at the White House.  The rest of us may have to do with  
our "Sunday go to meeting" clothes or something rented.

Except perhaps for Pat Nixon.  When nominated, Richard explained that

"I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But she does  
have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she  
would look good in anything."
