[Grovenet] Community Garden

I went out and toured the two city-owned plots this afternoon.
The one at 19th and Fir has a line of tall conifer trees across the
south end, so most of it would not be much use for anything except
cool-weather crops like peas and lettuce. Also, it would have to be
broken to cultivation. So we'd better put that one on the back burner
for now.
The big old "Jail Garden" at the north end of Maple Street, however,
is ideal! Large, flat, good sandy loam, no end of sunlight and water
too! It looks as though it was still cultivated no more than two
years ago... some vegetables are still growing.
The two-inch plastic water pipe is split and broken from freezing,
but that will be cheap and easy to fix--I could do it in an afternoon.
I'm not sure if the adjacent field is city-owned, but it also shows
evidence of recent cultivation.
I'll keep gauging public interest, and hopefully we can launch this
project in time for gardening season!
Thanks,
Walt Wentz
