I doubt that it is a question of "keeping the economy up". I expect
that we are headed into something close to the 1930's economy, no
matter what we call it. The economy has a feed back loop that takes
the expectations of the people and works to make them real.
If enough people expect the economy to tank, they take individual
action that collectively becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. That
may be the reason that government agencies don't call a recession a
"Recession" until after it has been in place long enough for the
average citizen to loose their money or job. If everyone knew that
it was a recession they might take the same actions that those in
inner circles of power take. And the economy would fall faster and
harder.
