I doubt that it is a question of "keeping the economy up".  I expect  
that we are headed into something close to the 1930's economy, no  
matter what we call it.  The economy has a feed back loop that takes  
the expectations of the people and works to make them real.

If enough people expect the economy to tank, they take individual  
action that collectively becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.  That  
may be the reason that government agencies don't call a recession a  
"Recession" until after it has been in place long enough for the  
average citizen to loose their money or job.  If everyone knew that  
it was a recession they might take the same actions that those in  
inner circles of power take.  And the economy would fall faster and  
harder.
