I would suggest that the article's statement that over 60 have
returned to terrorism is a guess by the government.
However, no matter the exact number who have done terrorist acts
after their release, it is absolutely true that those who committed
terrorist acts after release were either terrorists when they entered
the prison, or they were not terrorists when they entered the prison.
Those who were terrorists before entering prison and who committed
acts of terror after release certainly did "return to terrorism".
So, that part of the statement is accurate.
Those who were not terrorists before entering prison and who
committed acts of terror after release certainly did "convert to
terrorism". So, that part of the statement is accurate.
The only part left open to question is, "is the phrase 'in revenge
for their treatment' an accurate statement of the motivation?
If it was not their treatment in the prison that prompted some
released feel free to offer alternate motivations.
I agree that other motivations can exist. A prisoner could have
relatives in Gaza, they could have family injured by the invasion and
occupation of Iraq, or with the resurgence of the Taliban they may
want to be on the winning side in Afghanistan.
There can be other reasons. But, I will tell you that if you lock me
up for five years, keep me from contacting my family, humiliate me,
electro shock me or treat me to waterboarding, then ... "getting
even" starts to look like a real motivator.
