HI Katie,
Wow! We've come a long way, baby. The flint drill would have been used where the tooth was probably decayed and  hypersensitive, ouch. In the picture it shows how much easier dentistry is if the jaw is removed and dry. Those poor people.
I remember seeing in National Geographic a brass or bronze wire that was placed in a root canal of a Phoenician's incisor (upper front tooth) I think that dated back about 2000 BC. Some times it seems that progress is slow but the dental world is improving. Next month at the Chicago Midwinter meeting an anesthetic reversal agent in being introduced. I haven't heard how quickly it works yet but it will be interesting.
