I believe the guy who was nicknamed the Father of the American Revolution was Sam Adams. And yes, during his time

Thomas Paine was known as the "voice of the common man," I think ... Anyone know? Also, a "rational radical," or something like that.

Not all his contemporaries rejected/despised him, no; that's just a generality. Thomas Jefferson was one of his friends.

Anyway, there are many examples in history of people whose thought and/or discoveries were before their time: take Galileo,for instance.  Or Jesus Christ.
