GIRLS TODAY Conference at Pacific University

A meeting for and about girls set for October 9, 2009

A day-long seminar at Pacific University on October 9 will bring together girls to discuss diverse issues that schools often cannot adequately address. The Girls Today Conference is designed for girls ages 12 through 15 years old in Western Washington County.

Through this summit, girls will have the opportunity to speak and be heard on these pressing issues with the aid of trained facilitators from Pacific?s School of Professional Psychology.  The summit will include an opening session, a forum about college, small group sessions on specific issues, a self-defense workshop and campus tour, and a free Girls Today t-shirt for all participants

Co-sponsored by Pacific University?s Center for Gender Equity and the American Association of University Women/Hillsboro-Forest Grove Branch, the conference will take place Friday, October 9, 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., on the campus of Pacific University in Forest Grove.  Public schools will not be holding classes that day because of a statewide teacher training day.  There is no cost for the conference.

The American Association of University Women Educational Foundation?s ?The AAUW Report: How Schools Shortchange Girls? labeled diverse issues ? such as sexual harassment, violence, early substance abuse and body image ? as the ?evaded curriculum.? This report and subsequent Foundation research has revealed that the ?evaded curriculum? is linked to education and achievement for girls. It?s not just teachers and textbooks that determine girls? achievement; a significant part of the education process is what happens in hallways, between classes, on the bus, and even outside of school.

Girls Today Conferences like this one are shedding light on these issues while letting girls express themselves and propose strategies to address their common concerns. The conference model is a great way to engage girls in critical thought and constructive problem solving, while demonstrating that adults are not only interested, but care about their educational and personal development. AAUW collaborates with local groups, parent-teacher organizations, counselors, and girls to organize a program that reflects the major concerns and challenging issues facing young women today.

CLEVE JONES has recently gained renewed notoriety with the release of the film _Milk_, which features Jones in his youth as a major force in the budding gay rights movement of the late 1970s.

In 1983, when AIDS was still a new and poorly understood threat, Jones co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Jones conceived the idea of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at a candlelight memorial for Harvey Milk in 1985 and in 1987 created the first quilt panel in honor of his friend Marvin Feldman. The AIDS Memorial Quilt has grown to become the world?s largest community arts project, memorializing the lives of over 85,000 Americans killed by AIDS.

When Jones created the 47,000-panel quilt that humanizes the lives of those lost to AIDS. Jones was preparing to die himself.? Instead, he became one of the AIDS epidemic's earliest survivors, and a new generation of gay activists has embraced him as a mentor.

Now at 54 this gay rights ?living legend? is busily planning his next act for the second week of October.? He has mobilized thousands for the ?National Equality March? on the nation's capital that he hopes will usher in the final era in his community's struggle for acceptance and pressure President Barack Obama to follow through on his campaign promises.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 10 AM: Help to move books from Henningson's Storage to the Rogers Room at the Forest Grove Library.  Useful to have a truck and hand truck but not necessary in order to help.

Wednesday, November 4, 2009:  6 PM - 8 PM:  Start to set out books on tables and prepare for book sale.

Thursday, November 5 - Saturday, November 7, 2009, Set up continues - let me know what time you will be there and I will have someone there to guide you in the set-up process.

Monday, November 9:  10 AM - 8 PM:  Book sale starts but we will continue to set up sale by putting books on tables and making sure they are tidy enough for people to read book titles.  New books will be arriving sometime that day from Hillsboro.

Monday, November 9 ? Saturday, November 14:  Starting at 10 AM each morning and going until the library closes each day:  Cashiers needed for two hours or more.  (Note:  The sale WILL BE IN OPERATION ON VETERAN?S DAY, Wed. 11/11)

Saturday, 11/14/09, 3 PM - 4:30 PM:  Clean up after book sale.

Monday, 11/16/09, 10 AM: Finish clean up and help prepare boxes of left over books for pick up.

their mortgages in cases of financial hardship or where home value has
dropped below values which would allow conventional refinancing options?

Does anyone have a referral of someone who does these programs? Regular
mortgage brokers do not always do these types of programs.

For those of you with loved ones in Iraq and Afghanistan (or military  
posts elsewhere) I just got back from the post office and wanted to  
pass along some good news.
The USPS now has a discount on the flat rate mailing boxes (the large  
squarish ones). Normally postage is $13.95 but with the specially  
marked APO/FPO boxes it is only $11.95.

For those of us who seem to be mailing more boxes than we wished we  
were mailing the discount adds up.
My hat's off to the USPS. Even though they are struggling with their  
own budget it is nice to make it easier to support the troops while  
we are still angry with Bush for sending us on these misadventures......

Microsoft has introduced an online tool to help in the assessment of 
whether someone has the H1N1 flu. The idea is to keep people at home 
where they are not spreading the disease. I have included the link to 
the questionnaire, and hope you pass it along to everyone you know. The 
more we can help keep sick people at home and not out in public, the 
better chance we have of keeping everyone healthy!

To supplement my Unemployment benefits while I'm waiting for the job market to loosen up, I have begun handcrafting garden mosaic stepping stones using broken china, stained glass, and glass beads. Will you, by any chance, be offering any low-priced but colorful china at your antique sale this weekend? Doesn't matter if it's cracked or broken. All the better, in fact!

Also, if any Grovenetters out there ever happen to break any of their dishes or just get tired of their old dishes, please don't ever throw them in the garbage again!!! I would love to take them off your hands so that I can turn them into beautiful works of garden art. I often give discounts on my stepping stones to people who supply me with their old dishes. Bartering rocks!

Remember to Fall back one hour to 0200 on Halloween.. 
I wonder if loosing an hour on my birthday counts as one hour younger?  
When I was on duty many, many years ago, I already had on my halloween
Costume, however, no one knew if was going to trick them or treat them.
Especially my younger sister, for I pulled up at her home me at our
dairy where she and her hospital work mates were having a pot party.  
Needless to say I caused quite a disturbance with the lights and sirens
on, of course I had no intention of doing anything, and just spun a 360
and headed back down the lane.... 
My brother "Spike" along with my sister and her husband were here to
visit the first of this month.  And she still has not forgiven me....

The ultimate goal of this documentary campaign is to raise the level of public discourse, compel people to ask key questions about the war, and urge Congress to hold oversight hearings. 
Creators Robert Greenwald and Brave New Foundation are releasing this film in real time, enabling them to stay atop an ever-changing news cycle. They have already released the first three segments of this five-part documentary: Afghanistan + More Troops = Catastrophe, Pakistan: "The Most Dangerous Country", and Cost of War online for free.

...who wouldn't be alive today if it hadn't been for one very special Tennessee black woman who suckled my grandmother at birth because my great-grandmother had no milk when my grandmother was born. As a result, you'd think I'd have better rhythm than I do, but no such luck.

Well, Alan, thanks for this...it really helped to cheer me up.  Two days ago, I had a near fatal heart attack while playing handball at the Multnomah Club.  They took me to Good Sam and here I am, ready to be released--I hope.  They had to re-start my heart 5 times with defibrillators.  Fortunately, I was totally comatose.  Feeling much better now and ready to come back to the Grove.

Geri has been my guardian angel through all this...I am a very blessed man.

especially, this time of year.  My sis says "one of these days some gal
will sneak up on you, and give a tune up, an I will hel her" .. This is
why my neck is sore, for I'm always looking over my shoulder.

 For those who have served on jury...this one is something to think
about...Just when you think you have heard everything!!? Do you like
to read a good murder mystery? Not even Law and Order would attempt to
capture this mess. This is an unbelievable twist of fate!!!?

At the 1994 annual awards dinner given for Forensic Science,
(AAFS)President Dr. Don Harper Mills astounded his audience with the
legal complications of a bizarre death. Here is the story: 
? 
On March 23, 1994 the medical examiner viewed the body of Ronald Opus
and concluded that he died from a shotgun wound to the head.? Mr. Opus
had jumped from the top of a 10-story building intending to commit
suicide.? He left a note to the effect indicating his despondency. 
? 
As he fell past the ninth floor, his life was interrupted by a shotgun
blast passing through a window, which killed him instantly.? Neither
the shooter nor the deceased was aware that a safety net had been
installed just below the eighth floor level to protect some building
workers and that Ronald Opus would not have been able to complete his
suicide the way he had planned. 
? 
The room on the ninth floor, where the shotgun blast emanated, was
occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They were arguing vigorously
and he was threatening her with a shotgun! The man was so upset that
when he pulled the trigger, he completely missed his wife and the
pellets went through the window, striking Mr. Opus. When one intends to
kill subject 'A' but kills subject 'B' in the attempt, one is guilty of
the murder of subject 'B.'

When confronted with the murder charge, the old man and his wife were
both adamant, and both said that they thought the shotgun was not
loaded... The old man said it was a long- standing habit to threaten his
wife with the unloaded shotgun. He had no intention to murder her.
Therefore, the killing of Mr. Opus appeared to be an accident; that is,
assuming the gun had been accidentally loaded.

The continuing investigation turned up a witness who saw the old
couple's son loading the shotgun about 6 weeks prior to the fatal
accident.? It transpired that the old lady had cut off her son's
financial support and the son, knowing the propensity of his father to
use the shotgun threateningly, loaded the gun with the expectation that
his father would shoot his mother.

Since the loader of the gun was aware of this, he was guilty of the
murder even though he didn't actually pull the trigger. The case now

According to the explanation the story was intended to be an example  
of how with each new set of 'facts' the legal and moral 'outcome'  
would be different.  As the story unfolds the person who is at fault  
changes. The moral of the story is not to prejudge until you have  
heard all the facts, which is always a good reminder.

Howdy...I'm doing much better...released from Good Sam Friday, met with my local physician today, will see a cardiac specialist tomorrow and start the rehab process...and hope to return to Pacific next Monday.  No pain or discomfort...just lots of needlepoint arms and elbows.

I am presently drafting an article about paranormal activity (i.e., ghosts) in historic Forest Grove buildings for the coming issue of Restoring Forest Grove newsletter. Little did I know that we are sitting in smack-dab in the middle of a hotbed of paranormal activity in our quiet, little community!

Anyway, I have tons of information about Vera at Knight Hall (thanks to a great interview with Jeff Grundon and tons of documented information). I'm meeting tonight with Eva at the Grand Lodge to discuss encounters with the "Lavender Lady" and the wealth of other strange occurances at the lodge. And, Mary Jo Morelli gave me some good information about a ghost known as "Aunt Harriett" who resides in the Levina Watt House on 15th Avenue.

I also understand that there has been lots of paranormal activity in Old College Hall. Mary Jo told me that a woman named Karen Shield used to work there who recorded a lot of encounters with a 
"benign female ghost" who supposedly haunts Old College Hall. Mary Jo said she thought that Karen had moved to the Beaverton/Aloha/Bethany area, but I can't seem to locate her.

Anyone out there know how I might get in touch with Karen Shield so that I can obtain more details from her about Old College Hall's paranormal activity?

There are two things that guarantee a post to Grovenet will not go through:

1. Too many recipients makes your post look like spam. If you're sending to a 
lot of people, forward it as a separate message to Grovenet. I may okay it, 
but it might be too late by the time I get around to doing it.

2. Too large: maximum message size is 300 kb with attachments. If you have a 
big photo or other file, post it on a web site and just send the link.

And speaking of file sizes, why not use plain text instead of HTML email? HTML 
is the preferred vehicle for phishing schemes and other nasty practices. If 
you can't put your message in plain English, maybe you shouldn't bother 
sending it! Why waste bytes on fancy signatures and backgrounds? Let's make 
life easier for those who don't have super fast internet connections.

And while I'm at it, remember that the list will only accept posts from those 
who are subscribed, or rather only from the subscribed email address.

FAKE U.S. CENSUS SCAM

Attorney General John Kroger is warning Oregonians about con-artists, posing 
as U.S. Census workers.  Conducted every ten years, the U.S. Census is an 
important process that helps to both define legislative districts, and 
determine how to allocate $300 billion to local, state and tribal governments 
each year.

For every person living at an address the U.S., the U.S. Census will ask for a 
name, age, gender, race, ethnic origin, birth date, marital status, 
employment status, and other similar information.  Con-artists posing as 
Census employees ask for donations, personal financial information, and/or 
Social Security numbers.  Here are some tips to tell the difference between a 
U.S. Census worker and con-artists:

1.      U.S. Census Bureau will not contact you by E-mail.
2.      U.S. Census workers will not ask you about past debt, solicit money, 
or in any way harass you about finances.
3.      U.S. Census workers will not ask for you Social Security Number, 
banking information, or credit card number.
4.      U.S. Census workers will have identification; a copy of the 
notification letter you received, or should have received, in the mail 
describing the survey; and, depending on the area, a laptop and laptop case 
bearing the insignia of the U.S. Census Bureau.

The header of your message says you composed it in Apple Mail, with which I'm 
not familiar, but somewhere you probably have preferences set to plain text, 
for it also says:
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

But it may also just adopt the format of the message to which you are 
replying.

On the other hand, I looked back at one of our original posts and that was 
also in plain text.

At any rate, if it gives you a choice of fonts, it's not plain text.

The Mail menu > Preferences opens a window, the Composing icon brings  
choices like  "Composing: Message Format (Rich Text / Plain Text)"

things, for Mr Gates added a virus, and spam filter, which also reminds
me when my "Cookie Jar" needs to be emptied. It also says that anytime I
pull up a URL that it will automatically coppy my webs cookie info. 

Each morning, or the first I start up, 
I will stick my finger in my webs cookie pot, so to speak. So I guess it
is to say "Keep Your Fingers out of the cookie jar"! 
Spam ( ?spam ) noun: unsolicited usu. commercial e-mail sent to a
large number of addresses . This morning there were only about 6 or so. 

Also at last check this morning while while enjoying my first cup of
Hosstyle Coffee on my deck, and observing intently at the precipitation,
I noticed my gauge indicated 2.70 inches so far.
And Mr Ed, be-careful not to stand to close while reading your gauge!

And speaking of spam, I kinda like canned spam and eggs any time, for I
got used to it while in the service.

Alan,
   For some reason your comment on spam reminded me of a story my mom  
likes to tell.
During WWII both of her brothers were on the battlefield (one navy  
one army) and they were going to be coming home.
She and my grandmother (her mom) wanted to make a special meal to  
celebrate their homecoming and spam had just become available in  
Missouri and everybody was raving about it. So they bought some and  
had fun deciding how to present it for the happy occasion. The navy  
brother came home first and they were so disappointed when before  
dinner he said he didn't care what they were eating as long as it  
wasn't Spam.  He had gotten 'used' to it too and was more than happy  
to be rid of it.
I don't know what they did for dinner that night or when the army  
brother came home a bit later but she just remembers it as one of  
those aha moments when she learned that not everybody felt the same  
way about 'new' products.

Didn't you mention your cat kneading your shoulder? I pictured a cat moving it's paws in a kneading movement.  As little kids we watched our grandmother and mother making bread and an old family joke was frequently repeated about "why do you (choose one: need, knead ) the dough?"

CLEVE JONES has recently gained renewed notoriety with the release of the film _Milk_, which features Jones in his youth as a major force in the budding gay rights movement of the late 1970s.

In 1983, when AIDS was still a new and poorly understood threat, Jones co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Jones conceived the idea of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at a candlelight memorial for Harvey Milk in 1985 and in 1987 created the first quilt panel in honor of his friend Marvin Feldman. The AIDS Memorial Quilt has grown to become the world?s largest community arts project, memorializing the lives of over 85,000 Americans killed by AIDS.

When Jones created the 47,000-panel quilt that humanizes the lives of those lost to AIDS. Jones was preparing to die himself.? Instead, he became one of the AIDS epidemic's earliest survivors, and a new generation of gay activists has embraced him as a mentor.

Now at 54 this gay rights ?living legend? continues to work for gay rights.? In the second week of October he mobilized thousands for the ?National Equality March? on the nation's capital that he hopes will usher in the final era in his community's struggle for acceptance and pressure President Barack Obama to follow through on his campaign promises.

Greetings from a lurking Grovenut.

I am taking a technical writing class at Clark College in Vancouver,WA 
Yes, it's a long drive from the grove, but that's another topic.

My term project includes a survey to collect "customer" opinion.  In the
12+ years that I've been subscribed to the list, one thing I know about
the Grovenuts is that they're full of opinions. Some lean to Green,
others to Blue or Red,  but no matter the shade or hue, you generally
like to share them.

All respondents can be assured that they will become life members of the
Metropolitan Urban Diversity - Municipal Utility District (or MUD-PUD
for short.)  That's my fictitious employer.  It's a fine organization
where all our services are free, and sometimes useful! 

I hope that this survey - aside from providing  some raw data for me to
use - will get some of you thinking  about your next energy conservation
moves.
If my end project should turns out reasonably worthwhile, (potentially
useful,) I'll share the results with you.

The survey is collecting your "Alternative Energy Impressions"
Admittedly,  I'm too cheap to buy the $20 full access to Survey Monkey,
and am using 2 free smaller surveys rather than one larger one, so

Both those are pretty easy Steven,

Cornelius  was the guy's name the pass (father) and town (son) were
named after.

FG Junction:
When names don't make sense look around carefully and you'll probably
see evidence of a railroad track nearby. 
The branch from that junction (somewhere nearby)  went/goes to FG (the
end of line) 
another notable name is at the end of Cornelius Pass @ TV hwy --
Reedville - The 'town' no longer exists, but the RR has no need to
change their designations.
