Environmental hormones are so commonplace in modern society that there is no way to completely avoid them. They come from pollutants, drugs, hormone-injected meats and dairy foods, plastics, pesticides, and hormone replacement drugs for both sexes. Nearly 40% of the pesticides used in commercial agriculture are suspected hormone disrupters. All of the Earth's waterways are connected, so chemical pollutants containing environmental hormones can reach your food supply wherever you live.
In 1996 the Environmental Protection Agency began implementing a congressionally mandated plan through EDSTAC (Endocrine Disrupter Screening and Testing Advisory Committee) to test 87,000 compounds to determine their effect on the reproductive systems of humans and animals. However, due to the enormous scope of the project, a lack of funding and strong opposition from the chemical industry, progress is very slow moving.
Hormone disrupters can affect your entire endocrine system, including the communication system of your glands, hormones and cellular receptors in your body. They alter the production and breakdown of your own hormones, and the function of your hormone receptors--disrupting hormone balance at its developmental core. They can compete for hormone receptor sites in the body and bind to them in place of natural hormones, causing fluctuations in hormonal levels in the body. They are a serious concern for women in early pregnancy because a developing embryo is highly sensitive to estrogen disrupter toxicity.
Are hormone disrupters impacting you?
Signs that you may have estrogen disruption:
- Breast inflammation and pain that worsens before menstrual periods, usually followed by heavy, painful periods.
- Weight gain: especially in the hips.
- Hot flashes: estrogen disruption's effect on the hypothalamus.
- Endometriosis: now linked to dioxin, an air-born hormone disrupter.
- Breast and uterine fibroid development, ovarian cysts, and pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Breast, uterine and reproductive organ cancer: up to 60% more DDE, DDT and PCBs, known estrogen disrupters, in women with breast cancer.
- Early puberty: nearly half of African-American girls and 15% of Caucasian girls now begin to develop sexually by age 8, an indicator of estrogen disruption.
Are you at risk of exposure to estrogen disrupters? You may be especially exposed if:
- You live in a high agricultural area; you eat a high fat diet (fatty areas of your body store pesticides and other agricultural chemicals)
- You eat hormone-injected dairy foods or meats regularly.
- You're on prescription HRT drugs or birth control pills.
Is there any way to reduce your exposure to environmental estrogens and toxins from the environment?
First, cut back on fat and choose organic foods. Hormone disrupters accumulate in body fat--the reason a high fat diet is a major risk factor for long term exposure to them, and why it may lead to increased risk for hormone-driven cancers. The most recent testing shows at least 200 industrial and consumer product chemicals are present in the umbilical cords of U.S. children. Consider a liver detoxification program 2-3 times a year to help reduce chemical overload in the body. LEARN MORE>> http://www.healthyhealing.com/product.esiml?PID=32
Second, eat sea veggies like wakame, nori and dulse regularly. Algin, a gel like substance in sea greens, protects against chemical overload by binding to chemical wastes so they can be eliminated safely from the body. If you don't like the taste of sea veggies, try them in capsules like Crystal Star Ocean Minerals caps. LEARN MORE>> http://www.healthyhealing.com/product.esiml?PID=771
Third, avoid hormone-injected commercial meats, like beef. Choose hormone-free dairy products, too. Eat cruciferous veggies regularly to improve estrogen metabolism.
Fourth, use hormone-disrupting drugs like HRT drugs for menopause, and birth control pills only when all other options have been ruled out. Avoid hormone-mimics in personal care products, like placenta-containing hair rinses and conditioning treatments.
Fifth, consider a hormone balancing formula with herbs like dong quai, fennel, and licorice root. Phytohormone-containing herbs have incredible complex activity. At only 1/400th to 1/1000th of the potency of circulating estrogen, phytoestrogens help to balance your estrogen levels, with estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects to match what your body needs. Phytoestrogens can even help block uptake of excess estrogen, for added protection against estrogen-driven problems.
Crystal Star Female Harmony caps help to reestablish hormone harmony and have been used safely by women from puberty through menopause with very good results.

Most women notice results within the first 2 weeks of taking a hormone balancing whole herb combination. For chronic or long standing problems, the results may take longer. The rule of thumb is one month of herbal therapy for each year you've had the problem.
