I agree that directly bailing out the big three is not the way to go. In his
"While Detroit Slept" piece Thomas Friedman said that it is like bailing out
typewriters on the verge of the Internet.

Why not use incentives? They stimulates the market and incentives can be
used to mold consumer behavior. If we just give the money to the big three
they are going to keep doing the same thing. As soon as gas prices dropped,
sales of gas hogs jumped right back up.

I would like to be MPG based incentives in addition to plug-in incentives.
This seems more fair to me since it would not require the government to pick
the companies (old or new).  While at the same time it encourages innovation
and supports consumer choice.
