I've never been in a "first gen" Insight, so I was wondering if any of you current or former Insight owners want to take a look at the new one to help me compare and contrast. If you've converted an Insight to plug-in hybrid or full-on EV, maybe you could help me evaluate the potential of the new Insight for doing the same. The only caveat is that I can't let anyone else drive the car, since it comes from Honda's press fleet. Also, I am a journalist, and I will be taking notes. If you'd like to check out the car but don't want to be quoted, that's cool, too. Just let me know. If anyone's interested, my schedule is pretty flexible. Maybe a few of us could get together at once over the weekend or after work? Last week I went through this after I got my TWIKE running for the first time (3 wheeled enclosed vehicle similar configuration to the Zap). I spent 30 minutes on the phone with the DMV figuring out how it is classified (as a motorcycle), what I needed to do to get it titled, registered, etc. Next I talked to my insurance agent (figuring I'd go with just liability) but they said they would not ensure electric vehicles of any kind. Ugh. I have my home, 3 cars, and an umbrella policy with them for the last 10 years and they can not help. I consulted the OEVA archive and put in calls to 3 other possible agents. I have to hand it to Claire Luton at Country Financial. They had no problem insuring it and provided more than just liability insurance. I did have to move my other insurance needs to them (which saved me some money due to the lower rates and moving all of your insurance will probably be typical of most any insurance company). Their office is located in Tigard just off 5. Claire has attended some OEVA meetings so she is no stranger to us weird EV folks. Got it at Eco-motion at 14/Sandy. Four grand for a 2008. Get 'em while they're hot because Eco-motion is going out of business. Al the salesman was pretty low- key -- kind of as if he didn't really care if I bought the thing or not. But he let me drive all the cars I wanted till I found the perfect one. I had to hunt around for insurance. Finally found some, which is good because Allstate won't insure a Zap. Weird -- they'll cover a conversion but not a factory built. I'll have to report back on range, etc. I expect to convert the thing to an 84-volt system (adding one more 12v battery) and do some other stuff to it. My original plan was to convert an old Toyota pickup but working the numbers, the Xebra was a third the money, for a rig that's turn-key and works Right Now, does almost everything I wanted the Toyota to do, etc etc. -- and that I'm not afraid to work on. Anyone know how a Zap motor would respond to making it a 96-volt system? I'd probably need a new controller yeah? It's got a Curtis on board right now. I was planning on coming to the meeting tonight and if I don't make it this month I will definitely be there next. I'm looking forward to this summer project. And joining and paying some dues. Message-ID: Finished my Mitsubishi Mighty Max conversion in mid March after a year and a half of on-again, off-again working on it. I could have done it much sooner if I were more focused. I used Electro-Automotive's DC conversion kit. My new electric truck has: a Warp 9 motor, 20 6 volt batteries (16 in bed, 4 in engine compartment), Zivan NG3 charger, Curtis controller, an electric heater, and Thomas vacuum pump for brakes assist. I have 139 miles on it now, no problems. Range: I drove 35 miles and the state-of-charge showed 1/3 charge left so it looks like I would get about 50 miles from a full charge. I've only got to 57 mph on the freeway but I didn't use full throttle because I want to get the batteries fully broken in before I do that. I have only 6 full charge cycles now. I'm told 20-25 full charge cycles will get the battery pack up to full capacity as far as range and acceleration. The heater works well. The vacuum pump keeps the brake vacuum up and the brakes work well. Everything works as advertised! I'm very happy with my new electric conversion vehicle. It's quiet, odorless, pollutionless, and oil-less :). I sold the old internal combustion engine for scrap. Got $10 for it. Re insurance, another option for those who qualify is USAA, United Services Automobile Ass?n, in San Antonio, URL: www.usaa.com . They didn?t offer as low a rate on the EV as they had for gasburners, but at least they didn?t argue about insurability. Re registration, also make sure your registration form from DMV states ?Electric? instead of ?Gasoline.? I had to get the DMV to send out a corrected form after they had somehow misstated the power source as gasoline. It took only a phone call, but I had plenty of documentation right at hand in case the DMV person had wanted to argue. She didn?t. By now, they may be getting more accustomed to dealing with EV registrations. At least they got the ?motorcycle? part right the first time. These are ultralight vehicles that are raced to see who can travel the farthest on 67 pounds of lead acid batteries. Most of the cars are student designed and built in various classes at around 30 schools in Oregon/Washinton. April 18th is at LCC in Eugene--races from 11 to noon possibly a second heat from 12:30 to 1:30 April 26th--Pasco, WA at the Columbia CC races start at 11:00 May 2nd is in Lacey WA may 9th is in Springfield, OR May 16th--theremay be one at Clark Skill Center in Vancouver, WA May 23rd and 24th is at PIR Possibly one more this June in Mapelton, OR July 18th and 19th in Corvallis as part of the daVinci Days September 5th and 6th in Eugene at Valley River Center as part of the Eugene Celebration. These are great fun to watch and interesting to see the wonderful creations that students come up with. We just raced today in Hood River over a 0.65 mile course with a 40+' change in elevation and tight corners. The winner covered over 26 miles on two small red top Optimas in one hour!!! On level open courses they will travel well over 40 and even high 50s Mike Hodgert ________________________________ From: oeva-list-bounces at oeva.org on behalf of Ray Blackburn Sent: Sat 4/11/2009 10:17 AM To: oeva-list at oeva.org Subject: Re: [Oeva-list] Oeva-list Digest, Vol 66, Issue 8 Hi Paul. German energy firm RWE has stated that a cadre of respected automakers and energy firms have all come together in agreement on a three-point, 400-volt plug that will enable electric cars the world over to be recharged anywhere, regardless of which recharging station they stop at. Caroline Reichert, an RWE spokeswoman, noted that the idea here is to ensure that "a car can be recharged in Italy in exactly the same way as in Denmark, Germany or France." We're told that the agreement includes nods of acceptance from the likes of Volkswagen, BMW, Ford, General Motors, Fiat, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Eon, Vattenfall, EDF, Npower, Endesa and Enel, and while there's no time frame for when it'll be introduced, we're pretty stoked to hear that at least something has been decided upon." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... However, I'm not committed yet, so I don't know it'd be worth bringing me the banner. I have to get the car out of storage tomorrow, hope it has charge to get home, charge overnight, then get to the staging area on Saturday by 7:30am. If you haven't signed up for the parade (perhaps OEVA did so as an organization?) the deadline was last weekend. In March, Paul indicated: " Also Rick Durst from PGE is aware of the same April 25th date about 82rd Avenue of Roses Parade, and Carnival? I have the participation forms for the Parade, and Carnival. I do not know if we want to participate in the Carnival?" Anyway, if it doesn't rain and all goes well (and I'm not still sick), I may be doing the parade with the Milburn. The big unknown for me is where to recharge for the trip back...might want to bring my genset. -Myles www.evalbum.com/348 -----Original Message----- From: oeva-list-bounces at oeva.org [mailto:oeva-list-bounces at oeva.org] On Behalf Of Tim Kutscha Sent: Thursday, April 23, 2009 4:48 PM To: oeva-list at oeva.org Subject: [Oeva-list] OEVA banner for 82nd ave parade to someone near downtown? Randell Fishman's ElectraFlyer-C?a heavily modified Moni homebuilt motorglider powered by an 18W electric motor and battery pack?is for sale to the highest bidder on eBay. "As far as I know, this is the first practical electric airplane ever," said Fishman. "Someday that'll probably be worth something." The single-seat ElectraFlyer-C can fly for a little over an hour at 70 mph. Fishman figures that hour costs about $10.60?$10 toward the lifespan of the $8500 Li-ion battery pack and 60 cents worth of electricity. Fishman is selling the airplane in part because he's focusing his efforts on a new, two-place design that he hopes will eventually qualify for LSA status. The two place is far into design with a composite construction, detachable wingtips for easy storage and a 50-HP electric engine. That airplane will have a 28:1 glide ratio and should cruise at 80 mph for up to two hours. Additional funding for the project is coming from a Lindbergh Foundation grant of $10,580, which is what it cost to build the Spirt of St. Louis in 1927. The parade started on time and we were able to get the 4 electrics to cruise in a bunch, which was pretty cool. Being that on-time meant showing up at 7:30am and starting the parade at 9am meant that relatively few people were really on the parade route watching the parade. Given that, it wasn't as exciting as most parades, however the number of participants, cars, bands and etc. was impressive. All went fine for my 1920 Milburn until 82nd ave led uphill toward Division St. The slow pace of the parade meant having to push the speed lever In and Out of First Speed repeatedly. While this sounds like low current, it isn't...the amp gauge goes to 70+ amps and only starts decaying before I pull the speed back to neutral. This is because motor speed never gets up high enough to reduce current. Long story short, having Hawker batteries that are near dead, on the slight uphill run, the car got slower and slower...eventually, some women bystanders offered to "push"...and so, they, and my wife helped push the car up the last part of the hill...should be an interesting photo if anyone got it! We made it up the hill, then slowly puttered past the announcer's stage, then ducked into a restaurant where we recharged our bellies and batteries. An hour and a half or so later, we drove back to EastPort Plaza and joined the car show that was going on. The Milburn was a big hit...we didn't park with the OEVA cars as they weren't registered with the car show----which is too bad since one of our cars would likely have one the "Most Green" trophy later in the day! There was no cost to the registering for the classic car show and really nearly any kind of car was entered. The OEVA member cars looked like they were getting lots of attention where they were parked. We stayed until 2pm for the awards ceremony. In the end, the 1920 Milburn Light Electric didn't get that "Most Green" trophy (a gas trike got it!!!), but we did get a cool trophy for the "Most Unusual" car. They must have had 40 or more trophies and categories they were giving out for---mostly muscle and really cherry restoration cars got the awards. All in all, it was fun, and I was able to plug in for recharge and we made it home fine. Need to finally invest in a new set of T-105's. I'm glad to hear that we had four vehicles there (three more than last year). I also wish to thank everyone who drove up to Ridgefield for the Clark County idea fair. I heard that at least Paul(Sparrow), Ray(Yaris), Rick D. (Solectria) and Wade (electric bike) were there on Friday (Did I miss anyone?). Tim(Civic) and Wade were there Saturday along with Rick's Solectria in the background and I hear that Ron (Jetta?) was there today. Given the coldish-rainy weather, most folks visited the indoor booths, but we had a good time showing off our vehicles and the solar carport overhead. Thanks to everyone who participated this weekend. The extra battery 200 mile version?should make it a little slower off the line. (Hub motors?) It seems like everyone continues to think in terms of a central power source like an ICE that needs a transmission and a method for distributing the motive power to the wheels. I suggest that the drive energy lost and the needless weight of the transmission and differential components are unnecessary and that that their removal would mean more room for, and weight capacity available for batteries. I believe that Mitsubishi has produced a prototype based on this approach and that the Volt uses this method also. However, you don't typically see it as a conversion, with the possible exception of PML's BMW Mini. However, I believe that they are in receivership. Anyway, I would start on my conversion project today if I could design it around a wheel motor approach. John P. Christian -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Some folks have build some products to demonstrate it can be done. The major hurdle seems to be dealing with what is called "unsprung weight". Basically, the mass of the wheel is increased when you add a hub motor to each wheel. The shocks/spring suspension system must force a wheel back down to the pavement when you hit a bump. The ability (or lack of ability) to do this determines how stable the car is over bumps (especially important when cornering). It may be possible in the future to use super lightweight and strong materials to make light weight hub motors to avoid these problems but that has not happened yet. Until that happens, hub motors will be waiting in the wings as a great idea (gets rid of lossy transmissions/gears). Here is some more material to read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_motor#Unsprung_weight http://www.nabble.com/forum/Search.jtp?forum=25542&local=y&query=hub+motor&embedf=25542 --phil On Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 10:04 AM, Christian, John P wrote: > Quick Question: > > > > Does anyone have any experience with wheel motors? Parallel parking requires a bit of arm strength, but overall, I'm quite happy with my power-to-manual steering conversion.
