Coca-Cola, Staples, Frito-Lay, AT&T, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) are the first Newton customers in the USA. The trucks, by Smith Electric Vehicles in North East England, were handed over at an official Capitol Hill ceremony. Darren Kell of Smith Electric Vehicles, said: "The electric vehicle technology delivered to these customers today can readily be delivered to fleets in every major town and city in North America. "The Smith Newton provides depot-based truck fleets with a realistic, zero emissions transport solution that both lowers greenhouse gas emissions and helps improve air quality in our urban centers." Powered by the latest Lithium-Ion batteries and a 120kw electric motor, the Smith Newton has a top speed of 50mph (80km) and a range in excess of 100 miles (160km). It can be recharged in six hours. Newton was launched in the UK by Smith Electric Vehicles in 2006. It is produced in North America by Smith Electric Vehicles US Corporation, based in Kansas City, Missouri. Missouri Senator Kit Bond said: "These next generation electric vehicles Smith is producing demonstrate exactly the kind of technology we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and end our dependence on foreign oil. Missouri is a growing leader in exciting new battery technology, making it an ideal partner for all-electric vehicle manufacturing." Three models are produced with gross vehicle weights of 7,500kg, 10,000kg and 12,000kg, providing a payload of up to 7,300kg. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I just wanted to make sure the Intel EV members knew the station was there. -----Original Message----- From: phil.hochstetler at gmail.com [mailto:phil.hochstetler at gmail.com] On Behalf Of phil hochstetler Sent: Monday, August 17, 2009 10:52 AM To: Norris-York, William; OEVA Subject: Re: [Oeva-list] Intel JF charging stations The PGE map that lists this charging station says "Note: Charging for Intel Employees only" so that kinds of makes it useless for others even though it would be useful to me as I work within 5 miles of its location and drive my EV daily and make trips in that direction on occasion. Is this Intel policy or just PGE?. The Nike site is also listed as "Employees only and Authorized visitors" what ever that means. I'm including it here so you can see what we discussed. Cheers, Tim p.s. Don't forget our election meeting coming up in September. You need to be an OEVA member to vote. --------------------- Feedback from EV Awareness Day 2009 Good Points - There was plenty of electricity there - The solar carport was really cool - The charging station was cool - The platform with microphone/speakers was good - We had a huge number of EVs including the White Zombie and a Tesla! There was a boat and a Bearfoot ATV too. - We had good sponsors - The location was effective at raising public awareness - We got the Mayor and two VPs to speak Things to improve: - Need more media coverage - Let's get even more EVs! - The vendors had plenty of outlets, but the EV owners needed to rotate spots. Could we get an extension cord to move the outlet around instead of the cars? - Have the speeches later in the day when more people are there - Parking to attend the EVent was difficult. Find a lot or direct people to a local parking garage. Suggest taking Max from a parking area like Lloyd Center - Contact lotsa newspapers to have our EVent listed in the "weekend events" or "Arts & Entertainment" sections - Hang the large banner the day before to pique interest - The Pioneer Square staff seemed to tear down the tents early - Contact corporate sponsors way ahead of time, some need four months of lead time Other ideas - Have the EVent next to the Farmers Market to attract crowds - Get some protestors to make a big fuss and attract attention :) - Have a TV or computer monitor running a bunch of video clips of electric vehicles like the White Zombie or KillaCycle --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Feedback for what Members want to see in OEVA - People want to know the latest news on the upcoming "user-friendly" EVs being made available by the auto manufacturers. Point to a website with the latest data - Every meeting announce new EVs available for purchase (converted and commercial) so people are aware of what's available - There's a shift in interest from building EVs to buying them - Have a "garage crawl" tech session with a BBQ/Social gathering so that people can see all the projects currently underway - Have Mike Brown from ElectroAuto come up to give a weekend session on how to convert a vehicle - Have more gatherings that are "hands on" with the vehicles, less talking - Have lectures on different EV components (motors, controllers, batteries, etc...) - We need more and bigger OEVA signs to raise awareness of the group - We should have OEVA (not just EAA) flyers and posters to direct people towards our group - Keep doing outreach - We need a dedicated and effective outreach coordinator - Have events that give rides (possibly test drives) of electric vehicles to raise interest - Contact other local car modding clubs and have joint events, perhaps go to an auto show - We need more committees to delegate responsibilities to so that individuals don't get burned out - We should have more OEVA specific EVents that focus on the needs of the members like building/technology items - It would be cool to be in the Rose Parade or Electric Light Parade - We could have joint events with car stereo competition events (they do electric too!) - Reach out to electronic geeks (FreeGeek?) for more interest - It's really cool that Nissan picked Portland as a target city for their "Leaf" car - Associate OEVA with new electric cars that come out to increase our positive image - Promote the OEVA more, not just the EAA (we mostly use EAA flyers) - The World Trade Center is an excellent place to meet, let's not lose this meeting place - Have a joint technical meeting with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) - Join forces with HPV (Human Powered Vehicles) for events From tim_kutscha at yahoo.com Sat Aug 22 09:27:05 2009 From: tim_kutscha at yahoo.com (Tim Kutscha) Date: Sat, 22 Aug 2009 09:27:05 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Oeva-list] Elections of OEVA Officers at September Meeting Message-ID: <6359.86179.qm@web110505.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Hi All, We'll be holding an election for OEVA officers at the September meeting. It sounds neat and sure they are clean but they would be far worse for our environment and your wallet. It costs close to four times as much to power a hydrogen vehicle then an EV. Even if the price of energy drops that just makes it cost less to drive an EV. If energy prices increase then an EV becomes the far better investment for transportation. If you drive an EV and it cost you 2.00 that trip would cost 8.00 in hydrogen. If power rates increase 100 percent then the difference jumps form 4 dollars to 16 dollars. Rates for power will cost 100 percent more at some point. Either we will have inflation, shortages or increased demand. We have very inexpensive power here in the Northwest other areas in the US are as much as four or five times higher. We are very close to having batteries mass-produced that will vastly increase the range of EVs. It makes far more sense to just charge a battery pack and drive then to use electric to make hydrogen.
