July 1, 2009 ? Coulomb Technologies, the leader in charging station infrastructure, today announced that the City of Hillsboro is the first in the State of Oregon to announce plans to deploy ChargePoint? Networked Charging Stations for plug-in and electric vehicles. The 16 charging stations will be installed in downtown Hillsboro including their new ?green? intermodal transit facility to be built in 2009. The charging stations, available for public use, are part of the city?s large-scale sustainability and green movement, designed to showcase conservation, environmentalism and eco-friendly design. Long known as the ?Silicon Forest,? for its high-tech roots, Hillsboro is located 15 miles outside of Portland and is the home to more than 90,000 residents. ?Our city is progressive and aggressive in implementing sustainable solutions to environmental and economic challenges,? said David Robinson, director of Facilities and Fleet, City of Hillsboro. ?We have a large forward-thinking population ready to embrace electric vehicle technology and the City is committed to providing the facilities to meet the public?s demand. . These charging stations will be conveniently located in the heart of downtown, only one block from our train station, one block from our hospital and a short walk from Pacific University. We selected Coulomb?s charging stations because of the integrated advanced technology features; Coulomb is the only company we have found that has examined every facet of EV charging technology and developed the comprehensive solution. We are proud to be the first in the state to showcase this advanced technology; we hope other cities will follow and help us make Oregon the national leader in EV technology delivery.? Coulomb Technologies has developed the charging stations for municipalities, utilities, green office buildings and parking garages to allow consumers to charge their electric vehicles wherever they live, work and shop. Consumers subscribe to the ChargePointSM Network and receive a ChargePoint Smart Card that allows them to charge their car at any charging station worldwide. The ChargePoint Network enabled charging stations provide: ? A revenue stream to pay for electricity, capital equipment and maintenance ? The ability for drivers to find unoccupied charging stations via web-enabled cell phones ? Notification by SMS Text or email when charging is complete ? Authenticated access to eliminate energy theft ? Authorized energizing for safety ? Remote monitoring and diagnostics for superior quality of service ? Smart Grid integration for utility load management with future V2G capabilities To locate available charging stations, visit www.mychargepoint.net and click ?Find Stations?. Coulomb?s charging stations were sold to the City of Hillsboro through their Northwest distributor Charge Northwest http://www.chargenw.com/. ?The City of Hillsboro has long been known for their deep roots in technology and environmentalism,? said Richard Lowenthal CEO of Coulomb Technologies. ?The selection of Coulomb?s networked charging stations will give the city new bragging rights when it comes to advanced infrastructure.? About Coulomb Technologies, Inc. Coulomb Technologies headquartered in Campbell, Calif., offers a family of products and services that provide a plug-in vehicle charging infrastructure, which includes ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations ranging in capability from 120V 15A to 240V 80A AC charging to future 120kW DC charging. As long as you have a VIN number (which I do) and a country of origin certificate (which I had), getting it titled is about 20 minutes at the DMV (no inspection required). Temporary permit is issued on the spot (if you have proof of insurance). The insurance was another matter. My then current insurance company of nearly 20 years (The Hartford) totally declined to offer me any kind of insurance. I went shopping around and from the OEVA list found Country Financial will ensure EV's at reasonable rates and moved all my insurance to them (and saved a few $$ to boot). So, there was some work involved but not too much. My insurance agent is Claire Luton (claire.luton at countryfinancial.com). She is based out of an office in Tigard. --phil On Wed, Jul 1, 2009 at 1:45 PM, Dan Bortel wrote: > Phil, > > How hard was it to get it licensed as a motorcycle and to find insurance for > it? Considering that it is only a PHEV-15, that is sad. * http://tinyurl.com/l8x9ss *According to Japan's Nikkei news agency, Toyota has decided to start series production of a plug-in version of the Prius hybrid in 2012. At launch, the automaker plans to build about 20,000-30,000 units a year of the plug-in hybrid. According to the report, the car will be priced comparably to the Mitsubishi i-MiEV at about $48,000. That's a pretty steep price and quite a bit higher than the $40,000 pricetag expected to be applied to the Chevy Volt when it arrives late next year. That also puts the PHEV Prius at about twice the price of a conventional model. The PHEV Prius will likely be the first product to use lithium ion batteries produced by Panasonic EV Energy Co. The battery is expected to provide about 12-18 miles of range although it's not clear how much of that will be possible without running the engine. We'll probably have a better idea of that next year after the 500 or so prototypes go into test fleets starting late this year. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you plan on attending, please let me know. I'd like at least a rough count. The event officially starts at 9:30, but we have the square starting at 6:30AM to allow for setup. There will be sponsor canopies, a stage, and solar car port all being setup that morning. If you have a large item being towed in (like the electric boat, please arrive by 8:20 so there is room to maneuver. Other plug-in vehicles should arrive between 8:30 and 9:30. I'd like to have all the vehicles in by 9:30 so there are no vehicles being moved during the press conference at 10AM. We will be loading into the square from the east-side entrance on SW 6th Ave. There will be both 110-120V 15A charging and 240V 50A (NEMA 14-50) charging available. If you have drips, please bring pans. If the square is stained, we will be charged extra. I have rolls of paper that can be put under concerned areas. Cheers, Tim OEVA Chair ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's the information that Patrick (thanks Pat for all your hard work!) sent out last month: Get your EVs/PHEVs ready for our big annual event! The OEVA's big event each year is EV Awareness Day. This year (like last year) we will be at Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland. This is a great location since a lot of people walking through that are curious about the event. It is on July 11th, from 9:30 AM till 5 PM. If you have a plug-in vehicle, you are invited to bring it and display it for the public. EV or PHEV; two, three, or four wheels; freeway speed or low-speed; boat or airplane all are welcome. OK, maybe we won't have room for a plane, but if you have an electric plane, let me know and I'll see if I can make room. The only restriction is that it must be propelled by plug-in energy. You can get more information about the event here and here. Where: Pioneer Courthouse Square 715 SW Morrison St # 702 Portland, OR 97205 When: 9:30 AM - 5 PM Get Directions There will be pre-event breakfast gatherings (one on the east-side Portland and one on west-side Portland) on the morning of Awareness Day. William Norris-York will be coordinating the west-side gathering and Timothy Beltz the east-side gathering. Details will be coming out soon for these. You can help spread the word about the event by printing and posting the fliers, blogging about it, telling your friends... If you are bringing an EV in on a trailer, here are the logistics. I am expecting a lot of vehicles and with the stage and the vendor booths and tables, there will not be room for trailers and tow vehicles on the square. So here is a list of the open air parking lots near by: 1) SW 3rd Ave &SW Ash St 2) NW Glisan St & NW 11th Ave 3) SW Salmon St & SW 17th Ave (City) 4) NW 14th Ave & NW Irving St These are pay parking lots from Smart Park and the City, the city lot is $7 per day. The smart park lot should be similar. I was unable to get the free lot that we used last year. If you are using two parking spots, you will need to pay for both. Put the paystub for the trailer in the window of the tow vehicle. This is where parking enforcement will be looking for it. I can give you a ride back to the square from any of these lots if you need it. Just call my cell number 503.621.4552. You can come to the Square and unload first, or unload at the lot and drive your EV from and to the lot. I was totally psyched when a Tesla Roadster showed up, unannounced. Mayor Adams was there along with two VPs from the local power companies. John Wayland with his White Zombie was also present. As you can imagine, an event of this magnitude doesn't happen without lots of effort behind it. I wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to Patrick Connor for taking on the responsibilities of EV Awareness Day Chair this year and making this event rock. Pat spent huge amounts of time making this successful. Jeff Kim was also instrumental in gathering and organizing sponsors for this event. I think this is the first year we've had sponsors, which enabled us to expand our offerings at the Square. Ray Blackburn (our Treasurer) worked with our sponsors to gather the funds necessary for the event. I believe Claire Luton also helped contact the media to get coverage for this event. I'm sure there are many other key people that helped out that I've missed here. Please let me know who those are so I can acknowledge them at our next meeting. Thanks to all the OEVA members who brought their EVs to share. Also, thanks to everyone who tended the OEVA table to hand out flyers and educate people on the benefits of electric vehicles. We've raised the bar this year and we couldn't have done it without all your support. If you have feedback for this event (what went well and what could be improved), please e-mail it to me (tim_kutscha at yahoo.com). Tabor Park Centennial Celebration, Aug 2nd Message-ID: <51701.15034.qm@web110501.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Hi All, After the Wayland Invitational at the end of the month, it looks like there's a free electric/hybrid car show up on Mt. Tabor on August 2nd (see below). Phil, would you please add this to the OEVA website. Paul, would you please see if people can make it and send out a reminder? I will be out of town that weekend, but perhaps others can show their vehicles. Have a great week everyone! Tim OEVA Chair ----- Forwarded Message ---- Sent: Saturday, July 11, 2009 9:46:57 PM dave hillman (davehillman at comcast.net) has sent you (office: chair) the following feedback from the OEVA website: I met several of your members today at Pioneer Square. Hope that you will join us, as well as promote us, for our upcoming Mt Tabor Park Centennial Celebration on Aug 1st and 2nd. On the 1st we will have a vintage/historic car show at the top of Mt Tabor, on the 2nd it will be an electric/hybrid car show. Check our web site at www.mttabor100.org for all activities. We anticipate several thousand attendees during the weekend events. There is no charge to participate and I'd love to see as many of your electric vehicles on display as possible. You can also call me at 503-254-5931 or 503-720-0979. Thanks ! I am forwarding this to the local EAA groups on behalf of Chip Gribben [NEDRA PR Director] so please contact Chip directly ASAP if you are interested in sponsoring this EVent. Chip's email- futurev at radix.net Thanks Roy LeMeur ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >From Chip Gribben- Hi all, This is really, really, really last minute. I'm doing up some shirts for the Wayland Invitational featuring the "Plasma Boy" Logo. If anyone wants to be a sponsor and wants their name (maybe logo) on the back of the shirt, let me know. I need to know by this Sunday night Eastern Time since I'm taking the design to the shop first thing Monday so they can be printed and mailed out in time for the event which is a week from today. I figure if I'm doing a design on the front we could have sponsors on the back. Since I'm pretty busy with other projects I may not have enough time to recreate logos if I don't have them on file so I may end up just listing the sponsors centered on the back. I'm in the midst of designing a 50 page Washington DC Solar Homes Tour Guide with over 75 homes which needs to go to print soon so my time is tied up with that (the homeowners get upset if the info isn't right which adds to the stress) so I can only do quick and dirty artwork for the event but I think it would be good to have something and to help John out. John is footing the bill for the event. He hasn't had time to drum up sponsors so if you are interested let me know by Sunday night. The shirts are going to print Monday morning so they can get out to Portland in time. There will also be a brand new generic NEDRA shirt which we will be for sale at the event. Thats at the printers now. Since Jim did that terrific motor, he'll be one of the sponsors. But he could use some company. After much contemplation, I have decided to resign as chair of the OEVA. My life is out of balance right now and there are many other personal things I need to work on. I'd like to emphasize that this decision is driven by personal reasons and my own path in life and does not indicate any conflict I've had with people within the OEVA. I've enjoyed working with all of you and intend to remain active in the electric vehicle community. After notifying the OEVA board and discussing this with them, my intent is to do a debriefing of EV-Awareness Day at the August meeting, talk about the responsibilities of OEVA officers and then hold an official election at the September meeting. If you are remotely interested in becoming chair of the OEVA, feel free to contact me and I'd be happy to talk to you about what it involves. We have a Google group for the board which makes decision making fairly easy. We also have written "howto" documents on how to run meetings, hold an EVent and run EV Awareness Day. In setting all this up, I'm hoping to make the transition to the new chair as smooth as possible. I would like to strongly emphasize that being chair of the OEVA does NOT require owning an electric vehicle and, quite frankly, doesn't require much technical knowledge of EVs. I perceive that the biggest need our organization has right now is for a "people" manager to delegate, direct and have a vision for moving the organization forward. We have plenty of competant technical folks, but I think this organization would be best served by an organizer who can defer questions to the right people, if needed. Nominations for all OEVA officers are open at this point. If you wish to nominate someone (or even yourself), please let any member of the OEVA board know. You can contact us through the OEVA website under the "contact" menu item. Again, I'm honored to have worked with such a sharp group of people. Best wishes to you all. Cheers, Tim tim_kutscha at yahoo.com p.s. As a side note, Patrick Connor and Jeff Kim have been nominated by other board members for the chair position; however both have declined to accept the nomination. Tomorrow, Aug. 1, you'll have a chance to be the first to view the car. In addition, we'll make sure that you have the opportunity in the months ahead to be among the first to see the car in person. With a dramatic flair, the cover comes off the car at 8:30 p.m. CDT on Aug. 1. At that time, you can view images and information about Nissan's all-electric vehicle at www.nissanUSA.com/electric-car.
