Message-ID: <8CBB131B5E61DD4-10B0-149D@MBLK-M09.sysops.aol.com> Some of you have followed the sad story of Karmann Eclectric, a noble EV project embarked upon some?six years ago by a naive young DINK.? Well, two kids, three jobs, one income and two relocations later, the voltswagen finally moved under it's own 240V power this weekend! Just like its namesake, Godzilla controller #003 emerged from a long hibernation and started tearing up the neighborhood.? The president of my homeowners' association was out in her yard when I ghosted by, and?requested a ride even though the passenger seat hasn't been installed yet.? She didn't heed my warning to hold on, and did half a reverse somersault when I hit the go pedal!? Good thing the lexan battery covers protected her substantial backside from potential plasma burns. Then she helped me discover that 1" of clearance over the speedbumps is insufficient when a?portly passenger is added, but no damage there, and great fun was had by all. Much work remains, and the wife made me get some sleep after pulling two near all-nighters, but I still awoke with tired cheek muscles.? Who knew that a stupid grin stops snoring?!? Nothing new online yet, but a blog update is on the way. Wayland Invitationals- here I come! Please contact John and Karen directly if you are interested in this vehicle (1jdesmara at gmail.com). Cheers, Tim OEVA Chair ----- Forwarded Message ---- John Desmarais & Karen Garber (1jdesmara at gmail.com) has sent you (office: chair) the following feedback from the OEVA website: Hi Tom, We've got a 1993 Ford Festiva that we understand might be a good candidate for an electric conversion. It's only got 65k on it and body & interior are in good shape. Unfortunately, the ignition was mangled by a would-be thief so we wouldn't get much for it. I hate to donate it because I'm sure it'd just be scrapped...which seems wasteful. I'd much rather see it go to an EV enthusiast. Is there a way I could let your members know it's available? I'd prefer to get a little money for it--at least for the engine--but I also wouldn't mind giving it away to the right person. Thanks for any thoughts. Karen Garber & John Desmarais. Under the hood? Examples of wires that will have 12V in run position: Ignition relay (if applicable) Fuel injectors, Ignition coil (or coil packs), A/C relay, cooling fan switch, many others. Since these components will no longer be used you can use them to run something else. Depending on what you're running, other issues such as wire guage and fuse size (stock and whatever you might add) are worth considering). You can use a voltmeter to find a wire that is hot with key on. If you only need one hot wire the above will work. However, chances are you'll need more than one, in which case you can use the one wire you've found to power a standard automotive relay that will then take power directly from the battery to a terminal block (with fuses) of some kind and run all of your ignition wiring off that. For something in the rear of the vehicle, you should have 12 volts to the electric fuel pump (most vehicles after say 1990), which is usually in the gas tank or somewhere nearby. For power inside the vehicle itself, you can locate the fuse block, and then use one of the wires for the components listed above. Hope that helps. Maybe someone else has a simpler explanation. On Friday night I installed a full bank of Soneil 1214S chargers on the open-source Civic and fired them up. When I woke up the next morning, five of the 12 chargers had blown and died. (??!!) I thought these were isolated! Well, they are, to a certain extent. After opening up and looking at the circuit for one of the failed chargers, I found that the capacitors across the isolation boundary don't have a high enough rated voltage on them to handle the AC waveform from the wall PLUS the high voltage (144V) of my battery pack. For smaller banks of batteries (24,36,48V), these chargers should would work just fine. I'm sending this out to let folks who are considering individual chargers for their EV battery pack. I really like the Soneil design for smaller pack voltages, but I don't think it has the isolation to handle > 48V. You can get more info on my experience here: http://civic-ev.blogspot.com/2009/06/dark-day-with-soneils.html http://civic-ev.blogspot.com/2009/06/sleuthing-soneils.html I'm working with electricrider.com now to see if their brand (Joule) of chargers can handle the higher voltage isolation. EV Components are NOT included, however, the advantages of building this car over starting from scratch are: All ICE components already removed. Adaptor Plate included (you will need a shaft coupler -- I can help you source this) adaptor plate is worth the cost of the car, will sell separately for same price Car is already wired for an EV application. The car itself is no cream puff.? But if you are building a car on a budget and want to save some time and money it's a good deal for the price. Help doing the conversion is also available (for a fee). Some basic advice and guidance is available (for free). Delivery is available for the cost of gas. Thanks! We will also be opening for participants at 6am on Saturday and at 8 am on Sunday morning. Please enter the park from 8th street where there will be someone to direct you to the location of your booth and you will be able to drive into your space. Please drive only on hard surfaces and keep all vehicles off the grass. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, all vehicles must be out of the park by 8 am. Overnight security will be provided both Friday and Saturday night but we recommend that you remove or secure valuables. The festival hours are from 9 am ? 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday. VOLUNTEERS: Please have your volunteer staff at your booth at all times, and if you?d like relief for your staff ? there will be an event staff volunteer to relieve your staff when needed. PARKING: Street parking is very limited. There is a parking structure across the park that you can enter from 6th street between Washington and Columbia. The cost is $2.50 per day on the weekends. FOOD: Vancouver Farmer?s Market is adjacent to Esther Short Park and has many good options for lunch. There are also several small cafes nearby ? if you need ideas or directions, just ask at the information tent. They will have a menu binder of all area restaurants. Please bring your own reusable drink container/water bottle with you. EVENT STAFF: Staff at the festival will be wearing T-shirts with the logo on the front and ?Event Staff? printed on the back. If you need assistance, just ask anyone wearing one of these shirts and they?ll help you with your questions or find someone who can. If you have any questions or need anything at all, please don?t hesitate to contact us. We want this to be a great experience for you so you?ll come back next year and bring all of your friends! A typical smart charging system will dump current into an AGM battery up to a critical point (say 14.4 volts at 25 degrees C) and then hold that voltage until the current drops down to, say, 1 amp before dropping to a float voltage (like 13.6 volts). My question is: if the current going into the battery drops to around 1 amp, how long can I safely hold that 14.4 volts before hurting an AGM battery? I would think that the current going in is so small, it would just be dissipated as waste heat. I'm using 100Ahr Concorde Lifeline AGM batteries. I have resistive shunt balancers on all the batteries for balancing that kick in around 14.4 volts depending on the ambient temperature. Any thoughts? It is not the motors or controllers, it is energy storage. It's the batteries. 200+ miles of batteries is expensive. You could argue (and I would) that most people don't need more that 50 miles of range, but 200 miles of range gets rid of "range anxiety". Does a switch to EVs create a new foreign dependence? Will it cause "peak Lithium"? What is next in batteries? How much better can we expect energy storage to be in 10, 20, 50 years? If the gas vents some of the precious electrolyte is lost forever. Dropping from the constant voltage part of the charging to the lower float voltage or just ending the charge cycle with no float voltage is important for longest life. Sounds like you are going for 100% charge. That is the thing to do if maximum range is your goal. If you are looking for maximum battery life only charging to 90% and never discharging below 40% appears to double battery life. Then the charging voltage could be dropped to float value. Does anybody know if the pressure relief mechanism could be used to detect each burp of gas? Message-ID: <383318.48078.qm@web111113.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> Hi all, Here is an article on the?Yaris and the company?that built my EV.? http://www.hybridtechnologies.com/20090617 EV Innovations? research and development engineers critically analyzed all factors that affect the total mileage of the electric vehicle powered by lithium ion polymer batteries. Using 29.6 kWh of lithium ion battery energy and the same urban and highway route, the cutting edge research team of EV Innovation closely working with Superlattice Power Inc., USA, achieved an increase in mileage from 120 miles to 211 miles. The cell voltage range was from 4.2V to 3.3V and driving tests are performed on roads and highways with real traffic situations using experienced drivers. The development work emphasized on electrical regenerative power, modification of charging algorithm and cell voltage balancing using new version of battery management system. ? My battery pack is 35 kWh so they would be running it down to over 90% to get 29.4 kWh out of it.? Perhaps they can put another 10 kWh in and then it would run down to less than 80% and go 170 -?200 miles.? The cell voltage range on my car charges to 4.09 not 4.2.? At a?100 -?110?mile range my car is very useful.? Still it would be more useful at 170 mile range.? 50 mile range would not allow me to put over 6,500 miles on it as I have done since the middle of?January.??Since my car is being shipped back to repair a gear box leak I will ask them about this.?
