Electro Automotive has been in the electric vehicle conversion business longer than anyone - since 1979 - providing conversion kits, components, training, books, and videos about electric car conversions. We wrote the book on electric car conversions - literally. Our book "Convert It" has been the "bible" of electric car conversions for many years, and still is today. Brands and models of components and batteries may change, but the principles of a good conversion are fundamental. Due to the popularity of our recent workshop in the Puget Sound area, Electro Automotive will be offering the same workshop in the San Francisco Bay Area April 26 - May 1, 2010. There will be no more than 9 students per vehicle to insure that everyone gets to participate. Please pre-register to reserve your space. This workshop will guide students through the complete process of converting a vehicle to electric power. Classroom sessions will be combined with hands-on shop sessions. By the end of the workshop, the group will have completed two running electric car conversions capable of highway speeds and 60-80 miles range. Students will learn the principles behind good component layout, battery rack and box design and construction, and wiring, with hands-on experience installing the components. They will also learn how to apply these principles to different types of vehicles, and learn about the differences between AC and DC drive systems, and different types of batteries. Each student will receive a copy of the book "Convert It". Topics Include: * Expected performance * Choosing a suitable chassis * Components & their functions * Overall layout * Designing & fabricating * support structures * Wiring * Testing & troubleshooting * Driving & Maintenance Presenters: Mike Brown & Shari Prange of Electro Automotive Date: April 26 - May 1, 2010 Place: San Francisco Bay Area Cost: $1,250 More Info: shari at electroauto.com or 831-429-1989 To Register: shari at electroauto.com Space is limited. Youngblood, Bashing others ... "Mr. Gore, Wall Street and Detroit" will not spark an interest in your firm's Chinese imports or develop Investor interest, either. Remember another important rule ... desperation is a deal killer. Your email has a desperate air throughout. It may attract charity, but not capital infusion. Times are hard for everyone, and it is not a bad thing that you are forced to sell Chinese imports. You're doing something and that is a plus. My advice to you is to concentrate on a vertical market with a specific product, such as electric powered seat scooters for the disabled ... work directly with the insurance companies and build a revenue stream by aggressively marketing to one particular type of consumer that get their products paid for by the insurance providers. That will give you financial breathing room to tinker with the wider variety of LEVs listed on your website. Any new product class will mainly be purchased by a group of purchasers the marketing gurus call ...the early adopters ... EA's make purchasing decisions primarily out of keen interest in any potential innovations your product may offer, unfortunately your products are geared towards low priced mass production market (this is an instant turn-off to an EA) ... you are many years too soon for this Walmart type product approach ... Work on some designs that you can derive from your "years" of experience in the LEV business which may be the outcome of product deficiencies you have seen throughout what has previously been available from the imports you deal with (this is a good basis for garnering investor interest) ... or try to land state/local community lease contracts where your units could be leased to individuals with a credit card swipe at parks or on college campuses ... then you could do some creative financing and borrow against your "fleet" of LEVs as long as you could show they generate revenue. Think about a scaled down version of ZIPCAR www.zipcar.com with a public service twist to it!!! This would be innovative business strategy and that could help your cause ... If you simply want to sell scooters ... the last time I checked EBAY had over 32,000 scooters and related parts available at cut throat prices ... you don't want to live off those margins ... you must innovate in product, delivery, or a mix of both ... there are many areas to create an identity for yourself and your company. By the way, you have publicly violated (in writing) on five or so occasions in this one email various state and federal securities violations seeking investment in exchange for direct monies, advertising, labor, etc. for what I assume are non-registered securities. (i.e., "membership units") Sloppy and illegal ... don't let temporary, yet difficult to navigate financial potholes in the road cause you to take actions that lead to permanent closed doors. Best to you ... LEVs look like a great way to scoot around! IMO ... "For profit" will always triumph as long as you have producers that are able to add value, work hard, innovate, manage, solve, and create either products, services, or systems whereupon others are not able, unwilling or are not inspired enough to do so. > -----Original Message----- > From: oeva-list-bounces at oeva.org [mailto:oeva-list-bounces at oeva.org] On > Behalf Of Jon Youngblood > Sent: Friday, February 26, 2010 2:55 PM > To: oeva-list at oeva.org > Subject: [Oeva-list] Save Endangered EV Business in Portland, Oregon > > Dear Friends in our Green Community, > > Our Light Electric Vehicle Company directly helps our customers > substantially save: > > Money > $$$ On INSURANCE! > Energy Consumption > Air Quality > National Wealth > Stress > > We believe that with more people participating in our company, we can > change > the image of LEVs and convince the public that going electric NOW (not > waiting for the $40,000 electric car - sorry Mr. Gore, but pandering to > Wall > St. and Detroit is not helping NOW) will save them money and improve their > quality of life. > > Help us find: > > A New MEMBER/MANAGER to run, or manage, the company (see the flash > animation > at the top of our home page, just below the header). > > Investors - It's time to grow into the superstore of Electric Vehicles > that > can provide the PNW and the U.S. with the products and support that is > unequaled. > > Public Education - for the industry, let the public know the rewards of > LEVs > and the hundreds a month it can save them. > > Ads for us - Free or in Exchange for Stock (Membership Units in LLC) to > ensure our own survival. > > Labor - Invest your time and skills in exchange for Membership Units. > > Grant writers willing to work on speculation or in exchange for Membership > Units. > > You to Spread The Word of our plight, and of LEVs in general. > > > > BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION! Commuters soon will be able to recharge their cars at Kitsap Transit?s Southworth park-and-ride lot while they?re away at work. The transit agency?s board of directors last month gave staff the OK to install four electric-vehicle charging units at the newly expanded Harper Evangelical Free Church lot, at Sedgwick and Wilson Creek roads. The cost is estimated at $70,000 to $150,000. Money from the federal Surface Transportation Program for rural projects had to be spent quickly or the county would forfeit it. It was pegged for a trail along Miller Bay Road, but the project fell through. ?The county struggled to find some projects to spend it on, but couldn?t,? Kitsap County Commissioner Josh Brown, the board chairman, said at transit?s February meeting. ?We were sort of the last resort,? said Kitsap Transit Executive Director Dick Hayes. ?Somebody had to use it or we were going to lose it.? Next, they?ll have to find somebody to plug in to the chargers. There are only 22 all-electric cars in Kitsap County, according to the state Department of Licensing, and 12 of them are on Bainbridge Island. A handful of electric motorcycles and scooters also are licensed here. Tesla Motors is the only manufacturer selling highway-capable electric cars. It has a sales office in Seattle, but few people can afford its only model ? a $110,000 roadster. There are two on Bainbridge Island. The company is coming out with a $50,000 sedan in 2011. Also in Kitsap County, there are a few ZENN, Miles and GEM vehicles ? all built for low-speed, nonhighway driving. King County Metro Transit has 39 electric vehicle charging stations in its park-and-ride lots, said assistant director Ron Posthuma. Only four or five people regularly reserve them. There are fewer than 1,000 all-electric vehicles in all of King County, he said, but that could quickly change. Several automakers are working on plug-in electric hybrids or all-electric vehicles. Nissan will be coming out late this year with the world?s first all-electric, zero-emission car designed for the mass market. Reservations will begin in April, firm orders will be taken in August and cars will start rolling out in December. Seattle is one of five test markets. Chevrolet plans to sell its Volt for $40,000 when the sedan debuts in November. It has lithium-ion batteries and a gasoline motor used only for recharging, not to power the wheels, and is designed to go 40 miles on electricity alone. Toyota has said it will offer a plug-in version of its Prius hybrid by 2011. An all-electric version of the Ford Transit Connect commercial van is coming late this year, followed by the Ford Focus Electric in 2011. Kitsap Transit is putting the final touches on the Harper park-and-ride expansion from 170 parking spaces to 570. Construction crews mostly are waiting for weather suitable for finishing paving. The lot will open in about a month, Hayes said. This really isn't spam - this could be a big opportunity for any local EV shop needing investment money. There's this guy, Bob Cringely, who used to be a columnist in the Silicon Valley and was hooked in to all kinds of tech stuff and influential people down there. He's semi-retired now, and just runs a blog now. He's not always right, but at least it's interesting reading. But he came up with this idea of doing a search for start-ups *outside* Silicon Valley to have some Angel Investors he knows pour some money into. See the details of this idea here: http://www.cringely.com/2010/02/the-cringely-2010-not-in-silicon-valley-startup-tour/ The official kick-off announcement here: http://www.cringely.com/2010/03/the-smell-of-entrepreneurism-in-the-morning/ And the page where you can nominate and vote for your favorite EV company here: http://cringelyslist.democrasoft.com/ Be sure to register and vote! I think it would be cool to get some investment money for our local EV start-ups. Take care, Dave Killion -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Needs a talented detailer to pretty it up, mostly chassis and underhood. Missing rear bumper. Has sat in current owner's garage for five+ years. For sale as-is, where-is, close to Port Townsend, WA. Bring a trailer and load it up. The Good- Never screwed with. Never hacked. As factory original as it can be. Interior is in as-new condition. Auto painter guru could cure the minor flaws and bring it back to as-new quickly. (see photos) All 12V driven systems are up and running, good 12V battery included. Battery pack cost? Depends on what you want. I got a ballpark figure on a Thundersky Lithium pack with BMS from the good folks at EV Components. A pack of 160Ah cells should provide a ~150 mile-per-charge vehicle for approx. $17K all included. (based on an estimated 300Wh per mile usage, your mileage may vary :-) OTOH, you could string together a bunch of power tool batteries that you bought at garage sales to get the voltage needed to initialize the system and drive it a few hundred feet :-O (sorry, couldn't resist) Links to more info- Photo gallery of this vehicle- http://picasaweb.google.com/lektwik/1994ChevyS10USElectricarDolphinDriveEV# Examples of the same vehicle in the EV Album- http://evalbum.com/cntrl/HUGH Vehicle documentation and manuals here- http://www.uselectricar.org US Electricar Yahoo Group- http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/uselectricar/ US Electricar S10 FAQ- http://www.rotordesign.com/s10/s10faq.html Asking $7500 Serious Inquiries Only Please. The Tacoma EV Assoc held a Garage Day at my house last Saturday, and a great time was had by all, both experienced and newby converters. Of course, the sunniest, warmest day of they year thus far didn't hurt matters.. Saturday's work party was fortunately documented by TACEVA member Tim Ritchey, who also happens to have a photography business! He already put together a slide show at http://www.showcasenwphoto.com/ Just click on EV Garage, and if it asks for a password, just echo the user name: showcasenw Thanks to all spent the year's sunniest and warmest day thus far at my house today for the work party. Tim, Don, Bill, Roger and Stan all chipped in towards getting the Karmann Eclectric road-ready. Thanks to some creative thinking from multiple viewpoints, we were able to solve some nagging problems. A couple of Lexan sheets now shed rain from the stock engine cooling air vents better than the stock rain tray, while still allowing sufficient air flow, a stock outward appearance, clearance for the green boxes stacked below, and ensuring that my hidden 3rd brake light shines forth. A DC-rated breaker is now mounted 'upstream' of the PFC20 battery charger, to not only provide protection to the charger (standard downstream fuse installation only protects the battery pack and prevents full charger meltdowns), but to also provide protection when using the PFC charger in DC-DC mode, enabling 'opportunity' charging on the go from a DC source, whether that be a dump pack at the races, or to get an EV 'jump start' from another EV, even if it has a different voltage battery pack! The following exerpt from Manzanita Micro shows how to run their super-versatile chargers on DC input. Thanks again to Rich Rudman for such an awesome feature! I'll soon be installing a pack of secondhand EV batteries from Matt Schneider's Vanagon into the car trailer. These Dominated Dekas no longer give suffient range in daily-driver service, and I 'only' have 192 volts worth of them, but thanks to the versatile PFC20, I'll still be able to charge the Karmann Eclectric from this pack, just at a 3840 watt rate, instead of the 4800 watts possible from a 240V pack or wall outlet. However, this is a lot better than the 1800 watt limit from a standard 120V wall outlet. That'll be great for fast and safe recharging at Events and races- certainly safer than the 'monster jumper cable' method that some drag racers once used, simply connecting two packs through a contactor, knife switch, or...... alligator clips! Lastly, I intend to build a series/parallel switch that will enable charging of the trailer-mounted dump pack via the solar array that currently charges the trailer's 12V house battery. Running Your PFC Charger on DC instead of AC You may have heard that Manzanita Micro chargers can run from both AC and DC power. This is true under the right circumstances; in fact the PFC40HM is designed to run on both AC and DC in the Pi Prius conversion kits. NOTICE! The Manzanita Micro chargers were really designed to run from an AC power source. If you are planning to run one on DC power and it is damaged, repair work will likely NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY! It should be noted that the primary on/off circuit breaker on the charger is only AC rated. For this reason, we recommend installing an appropriate DC rated breaker or fuse on the input side when powering any Manzanita charger with DC. There are three Manzanita Micro PFC charger models which can be run off DC power without having to make any internal adjustments to the unit. These unique models are the standard PFC-20, the PFC-40HM and the standard PFC-50 (none of them have buck enhancement). If you are running a charger on DC power, it is advisable to keep the input voltage between 100 and 390VDC. The lowest voltage that will get the charger to turn on is about 60VDC. The absolute highest acceptable DC input voltage is 400V. NEVER EVER EXCEED THE 400VDC MAXIMUM INPUT VOLTAGE!! NOTE: The buck enhanced chargers including the standard PFC-30 and PFC-40 and the PFC-50B and PFC-75 chargers can be modified to run on DC by disconnecting the buck sensor unit and adding a jumper over two pins on the main power board. Contact Manzanita Micro for more information if you if you are really determined to run a buck enhanced charger from a DC power source. Lastly, we installed a surplus 30 amp, 240V Uninterruptible Power Supply in the car hauler. Once the car hauler's battery pack is upgraded to 240V, this will enable the trailer to supply off-grid charge to any EV capable of charging off of 240 VAC. (Pure sine wave, at that!) Since my car's pack is also 240V, that means the UPS will be able to charge the car in the rare event that there is a problem with the PFC20, and also it should power much of my house during a power outage off the trailer's dump pack, or if necessary, from the car's pack. On the mechanical front, we took off the insufficient stock pressure plate, and found the chatter marks and vapor-trails left on the Kennedy racing-duty clutch disc! Apparently, I hadn't taken enough pains to slip the clutch a bit during break-in and seat the pads properly. What contact surface there was, quickly became badly pitted by Zilla-induced vaporization! A new disc and Stage IV pressure plate (originally designed for V8 Volkswagen conversions of the 1970s) should do the trick, and to better stabilize that torquey drivetrain, we began fitting a Gene Berg weld-in solid transaxle mount and a Kafer Cup truss bar kit from V Dub Engineering.... Thanks again to Tim for the photos, and I'll also be putting some up on www.karmanneclectric.blogspot.com Cheers, Jay Donnaway Graham, WA -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've sent links in the past to the website, but unless you are already signed up with Linkedin you will become somewhat frustrated by not being able to proceed without signing up. The normal user protection flag goes up for most people and that is the end of the communications. Well, if you can overcome that, Linkedin will allow you to connect with former co-workers or college alumni or people in OEVA and other groups you might never knew existed. It is all about networking for career or education or other interests. I believe that Linkedin was originally set up as a tool to help you find jobs and re-connect with other people, from your current world or your ancient past. Unlike Facebook, this social networking tool is useful for pulling together people of similar interests, companies, schools or groups like OEVA. Not everybody can join this OEVA group; it has a moderator, who currently is our president John Christian. So you don't really have to worry so much about getting spammed by people who you don't know. (you will just get spammed by members!) However a mechanism is in place that allows linkedin friends of your linkedin friends to ask your friend for an introduction to you. So you can allow the request or ignore it. All this communication goes though the Linkedin server and your email address isn't shared unless you want to share it. Linkedin can describe this much better than me. Visit this website to educate yourself further. http://press.linkedin.com/about Then sign up. Then use the second link to find the OEVA Linkedin group, and join our group: http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=141935&trk=anetsrch_name&goback=.gdr_1268541944152_1 We currently have 2 subgroups within the linkedin group. OEVA Garage OEVA Education We will have OEVA Charging stations shortly. Does anybody else want another subgroup? Through these subgroups we can have discussion that will allow the subgroups to communicate without cluttering up the general group communications. I'll probably sign up for all three, but others may only be interested in the main group, and not want to hear talk about electrons, connectors and tools. Of course the OEVA-list at OEVA.org will continue to function, and can be used for general communications too, and OEVA.org gives us a general presence to the entire web community. This email portal will still function, whether you sign up with LinkedIn or don't. If you lease, you lease car + battery. If you buy, you buy both. There will be $7500 federal plus state tax credits. They have said that if you lease, they will lower the lease price by the amount of tax credits (which they keep since you are leasing). The effect here is to level the cost structure for lease vs buy. They plan recycle the batteries at 5 years by selling them to Utilities for grid stabilization projects. This has much higher dollar value than trying to recycle the raw lithium so again should lower the cost of the batteries (lease and buy options). New battery options for old vehicles. I read that they would be developing new battery options that would be swappable into the car in the future. This makes buying the car more attractive if you know that in the future you can get more range or faster charge times with better battery technology. This does not really lower the price now but protects you from a 5 year old car with a worn out battery and no options for replacement from the dealer. --phil On Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 2:38 PM, Gene Climer wrote: > Time will tell how reasonable the price will be. Sure, they can start out high and lower as a marketing scheme but, if that's what they are doing, it is short-sided. This leaves the door open to other EV business plan approaches, such as Better Place that is pushing a battery switch business plan: ? http://blog.betterplace.com/2010/03/quicker-than-quick-charge-extending-ev-range-instantly-with-battery-switch/ ? It's too high of an initial investment. People will take a "wait and see" attitude on which strategy will win out. My preference would have been for a more aggressive initial pricing scheme to encourage early adopting and maintain grassroots excitement that may encourage more states to push for a recharging infrastructure. ? An EV chassis can last practically forever, so I'd like to own my EV. But the batteries are on a sharp improvement curve, so I'd rather lease them. Nissan/NEC has a better chemistry in the works, maybe five years out. Their plan to take the batteries back in five years, replace them with better batteries that extend my range, and deploy the old batteries in electric utilities sounded very smart. Maybe it will make more sense to lease an EV at first, if most of its cost is the batteries. Good point about Nissan's cost advantage from in-house battery production. Besides, they should price to the market rather than to cost, like Toyota did with Prius. Anyway we're just speculating, we'll see. I wish they had started with a lighter (thus cheaper) 2-seater. Will it make more economic sense to convert a 1st-gen Miata than buy a Leaf? For some reason I haven't been getting the Leaf emails, I even called them about it. I do want to put down my $100. If Nissan sends out something, I'd appreciate a heads-up on the list, thanks. --Mike -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... So the course will happen. . . . . " I asked him if it was closed: "Well, in theory it is closed, that is, we decided to limit the class to 20. Don't expect Nissan to give away their products, especially if the prospects for ongoing revenue over the lifetime of the car is lower. Recall (from Who Killed the Electric Car) that there not much service revenue to the car as well for the dealer. All of this is more than a bit disruptive for automakers. In fact, I wondered why Nissan would do this. If you watch Carlos Ghosn at www.electrificationcoalition.org you can find the answer: declining oil production globally will not support growth in the automotive industry to meet the rising demand in emerging economies, and electric cars are the best candidate for this increased growth. The old business model will not go away overnight, but will gradually decrease. Nissan believes that this will position them to be a leader in the growth areas while their old business begins to decline. I think other auto companies get this as well, but are still stalling to maximize their short-term profits. In some cases, at least, this has cost them dearly as they have waited to long to begin this transition. Back to the price: we want this to be a win-win deal for drivers as well as auto companies, since we want our cars to be supported by a viable company. We need to focus on the total cost of ownership. You can add net-present-value to offset the initial higher price, but then you need to consider the durability of the car (especially the drive train), the fuel savings, and battery depreciation vs maintenance for a gas car. I recently took my 10-year old Insight with 7 years of all-electric miles into the shop at Hawthorne Auto Clinic to have the brakes and other things checked. The brakes were fine--look again in 15K miles. They rotated the tires and replaced the brake fluid (it absorbs moisture over time). They tried to top up the radiator, but it didn't need it (it didn't need it 3 years ago when I tried). All of this cost $260--not a bad price to pay for maintenance. I have replaced 2 tires so far and lots of wiper blades. So add up the costs of all those oil changes, filters, etc, and other expensive repairs as the car gets older. One big question is how long the batteries will last. The A123 cells that I use are good for 7000 cycles in the lab. On the road, they may be less. We know that being stored at higher temperatures is not good for LiIon battery life, but still need real-life data (which the first few years of deployment should help provide). If my 10 KWH last half as long as in the lab, that will be 250K miles. My high initial cost (for repackaging DeWalt power tool batteries purchased on ebay), is $1500 / KWH, about 2-3 times greater than the cost once Nissan's factory is in production. My cost for battery replacement: 6 cents per mile. I may have to become a taxi driver before they die of old age. ;-) The fuel costs are 1.6 cents /mi at 10cents/KWH. The leaf should be around 2 cents/mi, but it might be lower for in-town driving. Your mileage may vary... Don't forget the gas costs should rise at least gradually (if not abruptly) over the life of a new gas car. (In fact, you could consider this investment as a futures contract on the price of oil/gasoline. You can't get one for oil for more than 7 years out). Speaking of futures contracts, you can get one for electricity by buying solar panels. We expect the car itself to (eventually in mass production) cost less than comparable ICE car, since there are a lot less components involved. Note however that all the network connectivity, navigation, and displays make it more like a top-end option package. So I'm paying practically nothing for regular maintenance, 6 cents per mile for battery depreciation, and 2 cents for fuel. This is cheaper than just fuel for most cars. All in all, I would expect the Leaf to have comparable, if not lower, total cost of ownership when you factor all these lifetime costs in. You'll be buying a new battery when most folks will be buying a new car (and maybe some seat covers). Of course, since batteries are getting twice as good every five years for the last two decades, you may replace the battery with a cheaper one for the same range or get more range for the same price. There is a good chance that we may trade in batteries sooner if a secondary market for old batteries for UPS or power shifting develops. So I'm waiting like everyone else, but I'm more interested in the battery life than initial cost. We have credit unions and banks to solve the initial higher cost, but the battery life is the biggest factor in the total cost of ownership. The expected lower total cost of ownership gives lots of $ to fund the higher initial cost. This will improve a lot as battery costs continue to fall exponentially, and oil prices continue an unending upward path due to structural demand increases from emerging economies.
