[Oeva-list] Leaf telematics upgrade accomplished.

I did the 2G to 3G conversion on my 2011 Leaf.  It’s working and was relatively painless.

There were a couple little snags that I’ll mention here for anyone else who wants to upgrade.

You should have gotten a letter from Nissan if you’re eligible and/or need this.  For older Leaf’s like mine it costs $199.  I think newer one’s get it for free.

 schedule an appointment and get the part ordered.  Tonkin Nissan in Wilsonville is where I went.  They know about the part and it arrived in 2 days.  It seems they don’t stock it.
it took about 2 hours and I got a free alignment check.  Presumably they want to sell you an alignment if you need it.  My car is still straight and true.  Nice to know.
it takes at least over night for something to get settled at Nissan central.  Any attempt to communicate will give a communication failure message.
the next day you need to re-log the car into Nissan’s telemetrics.  You will know it’s ready if you can do an update of charging stations.  That doesn’t need the login but does need the 3G radio to be working.  If you can’t remember your login that Nissan assigned when you bought the car you can find it online.  Log onto https://owners.nissanusa.com/nowners/user/home and look for this.  The pseudo-link will get you to a PDF with your login.  The login function in the car is under Carwings setup/sign in.
if it all works you’ll be able to see your car and control the heat etc with the Nissan phone app or at https://owners.nissanusa.com/nowners/user/home

I also have found a replacement, of sorts, for LeafLink which is broken with no plans for fixing.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/eva-leaf-connect-to-your-nissan/id1050429958?mt=8  It’s very simple and easy to use.  It’s limited in that it only shows “% of charge” not miles remaining and you can’t see or set the climate timer.  For me that’s just fine.  When I’m freezing at a charging station waiting for the heater to start this is quick and easy.  Note the silly requirement that you need to both slide the “on” button AND click “done” under the propellor in order to get the heat started.  For me the turn on process is pretty reliable and takes a consistent 10 seconds after you click done.
