World-renowned composer and performer Terry Riley, senior disciple of
North Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath, has made annual (and sometimes
semi-annual) visits to Portland for the past ten years to teach and
present recitals in the North Indian classical vocal tradition first
brought to the United States by Pandit Pran Nath in 1970.

Pran Nath (1918 - 1996), the leading exponent of the Kirana style of
Hindustani classical music, was mentor and teacher to Terry Riley,
LaMonte Young, and many other musicians in the USA and around the world.
Terry Riley studied with Pran Nath for 26 years, often accompanying him
in concert and travels to India, Europe, and across the States. (For
more information about Pandit Pran Nath, see
http://melafoundation.org/ppn.htm)

This performance marks Riley's decade of service to his teacher, his
students, and lovers of Indian classical music in Portland.
