Aniruddha Knight is the ninth generation of one of India's most honored
families of professional musicians and dancers. He continues the
hereditary practice of bharata natyam made famous by his grandmother, T.
Balasaraswati. His concerts follow the traditional format established
early in the 19th century—a suite of music and dance compositions,
partly choreographed and partly performed extemporaneously. The
interplay in performance between musicians and dancer is unique to this
style of bharata natyam, which is noted for the beauty of its abstract
movements, rhythmic complexity of its footwork, and improvised mimetic
interpretation of the sung poetry. Ani’s ensemble of instrumentalists
and singers have all been trained within his extended family, and reveal
the profound musical understanding, mastery of technique, and
improvisational skills that are the hallmarks of the family's style.
