BLUE NOTE: A STORY OF MODERN JAZZ
GERMANY 1996
Director: JULIAN BENEDIKT
Sun Jan 18 4:00 PM

Alfred Lyon and Francis Wolfe, jazz fans from Germany who came to New
York to escape Nazism, founded one of the great jazz record labels, Blue
Note, in 1939. In the 1950s the company came into its own, documenting
the rich currents of modern jazz and creating a legacy of recordings
central to its history. Blue Note recordings of Charlie Parker, Bud
Powell, Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Horace Silver,
Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock and many others are at the core of any
serious jazz record collection. Benedikt's film is a fitting homage to a
company that remains in the vanguard today. Blue Note will be celebrated
by this year's Portland Jazz Festival, February 14-22, with performances
by McCoy Tyner, Jason Moran, Diane Reeves, Cassandra Wilson and many
more of its current stars. (120 min)

Join us for a Q & A after the screening with Jazz Festival director Bill
Royston, Darrell Grant, Wayne Thompson and Luciana Lopez. Sponsored by
KMHD.
