[Next Tuesday is a night to be in two places at once! For those who
can't accomplish that feat, you'll have to choose between these two
exceptional intercultural opportunities: a performance at the Waypost
(including Chilean composer and poet Gregorio Fontén and local lights),
and a reading at PSU (by Dick Davis, poet and translator from Persian).]

*/Gregorio Fontén/*
  Composer, singing poet from Chile. Currently lives in London. Known as
a Dark Satie because of his combination of microtonal tuning, ragtime
hints, and use of silence, his work has been described as one of
ramshackle and unique songs, whose effect is hallucinatory, corrosive;
both strange and beautiful. Combining psychedelic soundscapes and south
american huayno and cumbia rhythms with a distinctive personality, his
music is as much part of a local tradition as his own original creation.
The Chilean press has labeled him as the godson of the legendary andean
rock band Los Jaivas. As part of the poets workshop "Foro de
Escritores," he has been an active exponent of experimental poetry in
Chile; with works published in Chile, Mexico, and UK. He performs as a
sound poet/solo musician and has had electronic surround compositions
and chamber works performed.
*/Mark Owens/*
  A practicing playtheist. His FLUXUS and sound-poetry inspired works
have been performed in countries, cities, and planets.
*/Theriault, Smith, & Green /*
Comprising former members of Office Products, Incunabulum, and Dan

*Dick Davis Reading at Portland State University
*Tuesday, May 14
*7:00 pm

*Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 296
*Portland State University

Portland State University's MFA Program in Creative Writing is pleased
to announce a reading by Dick Davis, Professor of Persian at Ohio State
University and currently visiting PSU in the World Languages and
Literatures Department. Davis's renderings of classical Persian poetry,
including the /Shahanameh/ of Ferdowsi, /The Conference of the Birds/ by
Attar, and /Vis and Ramin/ by Fakhraddin Gorgani, have established him
as the preeminent contemporary translator of that literature into
English. He is also a significant poet in his own right, with several
volumes available from London's Anvil Press. Davis will be reading from
his own poetry and from his translations. The reading, which is free and
open to the public, is co-sponsored by the /Portland Review/.
