The nuclear disaster at Fukushima continues to unfold three and a half
years after that fateful day, March 11, 2011. The lives and livelihoods
of tens of thousands of Japanese have been irreparably harmed with
devastating human, economic, and environmental consequences. Here in the
United States, what lessons have we heeded from this disaster? And what
is the future of nuclear power in the Northwest in the face of global

Dr. Lyman will provide an overview of the accident at the Fukushima
Daiichi nuclear plant and a summary of the still unfolding crisis. He'll
discuss what U.S. regulators are doing to better protect the hundreds of

nuclear reactors, including the Columbia Generating Station (CGS) in
Washington State, what some of the known risks at CGS are and what is
being done to address them. He will also talk about proposed new small

*About the Book*

In the first definitive account of the Fukushima nuclear disaster as it
played out in real time, two nuclear experts from the Union of Concerned
Scientists---David Lochbaum and Edwin Lyman---team up with journalist
Susan Q. Stranahan, the lead reporter of the /Philadelphia Inquirer/'s
Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the Three Mile Island accident. An
intensely dramatic saga---including good intentions and bad, sacrifice
and avarice, government ineptitude and corporate influence---it is also
the story of the myth of nuclear safety and the heavy price paid by the
people of Japan when reality shattered it. Visit the UCS website to
