This native of NW North America is
a close relative of the japanese maple. Often grows as an understory tree,
but does well in full sun. Outstanding fall color, red-orange in strong
sun, more yellow in shade. Usually grows as a multiple trunked large
shrub to 15' but can get considerably larger under favorable (moist) growing
conditions, or will be smaller under less favorable conditions. Small, attractive
red flowers with yellow stamens unfold with the leaves in spring. Zones:
USDA 4-9; Sunset 2b-6, 14-17, Alaska-3.
