Surely one of the most famous japanese
maples, the Coral Bark Maple makes a striking specimen at all seasons. Especially
well known for the bright coral-red color of the winter bark. However, the
leaves are also one of the most elegant of all the Japanese maples and their
pale golden fall color gives a subtle glow, especially under cloudy or foggy
conditions. Best grown in full summer sun which enhances the winter
bark and brings on fall colors early so that they last a long time. Also
known as 'Senkai'. Introduced from Ireland about 1920. Zones:
USDA 6; Sunset 2-10, 12, 14-24, Alaska-3.
