Larix occidentalis
Western Larch

'Western Larch'

The Western Larch is one of our most spectacular NW native trees for fall color.  This photo was taken on the east side of Mt. Hood, where larches put on quite a show.  After turning golden, the needles drop for the winter.  This is true of all larches, but is unusual for a conifer. These are not small trees, but are well suited for larger lots or acerage. Larches have hard wood which has been used for railroad ties.  They grow 1-2' per year and are completely hardy.
