RACE TRACK BETTING

by Ted Peterson
The web site will help you place a bet and win when you go to a race track or when you go to an off track betting house.
Until a few year ago, you could not place a bet in most states, but now most of the states allow this under a lot of rules.
There are different ways to place a bet. The first thing that you will have to do, or say, is the track that you are placing a bet on. Most of the tracks will let you place a bet on a large number of different tracks each day. This can be from 6 up to about 100 different tracks. The mutuel employee will not know the track that you would like to place your bet. In Oregon most of the time you can pick up to 28 each day. There is one track in the US, that will let you bet on a large number of differest tracks up to 100. These tracks can be any place in the world. In Oregon, we have Australia, and almost all the tracks around the US. So the first thing you will do when you go to the window is to say the track you want to place your bet.
We will now tell you about the different bets you can place. Some of the tracks may not have all of them or they may not have all of them on each race.
WIN - PLACE - SHOW
In the past this was the only way you could bet. Now these bets will take in less then 1/2 of the money. The different types of bets are as follows. WIN. Your horse or dog has to come in first. You will make the most on these three. You will only receive payoff if your horse or dog comes in first. PLACE. Your horse or dog has to come in first or 2nd. Your payoff will be less but you will have 2 ways to win. SHOW. Your horse or dog has to come in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Of these three your payoff will be less then the other two but you will get some thing back if the horse or dog comes in 1, 2nd, or 3rd.
DAILY DOUBLE
On the Daily Double, you are betting that you know the winner of 2 races. This can be the 1st and 2nd or some other pair of races. This can have a large payoff but you have to place the bet before the 1st race of the pair.
QUINIELA
Quiniela is when you pick 2 horses or dogs in one race that can come in 1st and 2nd in any order. This is the type where most of the bets are placed.
EXACTA
Exacta is the same as Quiniela but you have to pick both horses or dogs in exact order.
TRIFECTA
In Trifecta you pick the first 3 entries to cross the finish line in exact order.
SUPERFECTA
In Superfecta you pick the first four entries to cross the finish line in exact order.
OTHER BETS
The above bets will take almost all the betting. Each track may have some extra types of bets. They may be Pick 3, 4, or 9, where you pick the winner of either 3, 4 or 9 races. There are also what is called a Tri-Super where you pick a Trifecta in one race and the Superfecta in another race. The Superfecta can be 2 races after the Trifecta. You have to pick the Superfecta before the race after the one you picked the Trifecta and then wait until your Superfecta race. There is also the Twin-Trifecta. On this bet you first pick a Trifecta and if you win that one you have to pick the Trifecta in the next race before the next race. There are a lot of other bets that a track may have. You have to check the rules when you get there.
TYPES OF BETS.
Beside making streight bets that were covered above there are some different ways to place bets. They are "box", "key", and "part wheel". A box bet is a bet on Extra, Quiniela or other type of bet where you pick two or more horses or dogs that you think will win. You can win if either one comes in first and the other 2nd any order. For example, a exacta box bet for 2 horses on a race of 2-3 will let you win if it comes in either 2-3 or 3-2.
A key bet is when you know the first horse or dog is coming in and you think that you know some others that may come in but you do not know the order. On a trifecta, you will say $1 key #2 with #3-4-5. You would win if #2 comes in 1st and any 2 of the others comes in either 2nd or 3rd any order. It could be 2-3-4, 2-5-4, 2-4-5, 2-5-4, 2-3-5, or 2-5-3. As there are 6 ways for you to win it would cost you $6.00.
A part wheel bet is when you want to make a multiple bet. For example, you want to make a bet on quiniela and you say "$2.00 part wheel 2-3-4 with 5-6". You would win if one of the first 3 comes in with one of the 2nd 2 in any order. You would NOT win if say 23 came in or 56 came in . It had to be one of each set.
AMOUNT OF BETS
The amount that has to be bet will be different with each state and track. Most of the time the minimum amount will be $2.00 for all bets. At some tracks you can bet $1.00 for Q-T-E-DD if you do key, box or part wheel, but all the time the minimum for w-p-s will be $2.00. Some tracks will not let you bet on exacta for less then $2.00 or $3.00. A few tracks will let you place a $1.00 on Q-T-E-DD straight but most of the time will not.
One thing to remember-DO NOT PLACE A BET WITH MONEY THAT YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE.
