OREGON INDIAN TRIBES.

by Ted Peterson
Oregon at one time had 69 indian tribes. In the 50s the US goverment assimilate all tribes into the main poputation and then we had no listed indian tribes.
Now all the tribes are trying to be set up again for a number of reasons. When a tribe is set up they then have control of their lands and can make it profitable.
At the present time there are 9 tribes in Oregon. They are:
Burns Paiute Tribe.
Confederated Tribes of Coos.
Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation.
Confederated Tribes of Siletz.
Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians.
Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians.
Klamath Tribes and the Coquille Tribes.
The governor's executive order EO-96-30 recognized State of Oregon/tribal government to goverment relations.
The reservations can be from a low of 4,204 acres for Siletz to the Warm Springs with 644,000 acres.
Total figures go from Burns Paiute wth 313 mempers to Grand Ronde with 4,670 members.
In 1988 the US government passed the National Indian Gaming Regulatory Act saying that the tribes could have gaming centers on reservations. They are to ask states to set up rules. Oregon has and as of this date eight tribes have casinos where you can go and place bets. The ninth tribe is working on it.
The casino at Grand Ronde (west of Portland) has more visitors in a year then any other place in Oregon. For a few years more people went there than any other place in the Pacific Northwest.
The highway between McMinnville Oregon past the Grand Ronde location to the other casino at Lincoln City is only 2 lanes and no spot where a person can get off the pavement. More people are killed there in wecks in a year then any other highway in Oregon. Take it easy on this road.
