RAILROADS in OREGON

There are a large number of different railroads that runs in Oregon. They are made up of 6 different groups. Each group is listed below.

Sumpter Valley Railway

A trip on a narrow gauge railroad of about 5 miles in the historic gold town of Sumpter and on to McEwen Oregon. This is located just off I-84 and 22 miles from Baker City. They are running in the summer. Address P.O. Box 389 Baker City, OR 97814. Phone 541 894 2268.

Willamette Shore Trolley

This line was open for service on July 4, 1887 and ran interurban cars untill 1929. The S.P ran freight until 1980 when SP sold it to 17 local governments agencies to preserve right of way for street car service. Willamette Shore Trolley runs excursions in the summer and over the Christmas time between Lake Oswego and downtown Portland. This track is 7 miles long and will go through a long tunnel. Mount Hood Railroad

An excursion train that goes between Hood River and Parkdale Oregon. It is a 4 hour trip up to the side of Mt. Hood. These trains have eating and other light concessions on board. You need reservations. Call 1-800-872-4661. Address 110 Railroad Avenue, Hood River, OR 97031. Phone 541-386 3556.

Albany & Eastern Railroad

Albany & Eastern Railroad is a successful short line railroad that operates a group of sections of different railroad companies that were no longer needed. This railroad is made up of what was the Grand Ronde division of the Longview, Portland and Northern Railway Company. Then they added 3 miles of the Valley and Siletz Railroad in Independance. In March 1993 they picked up the Mill City branch of Southern Pacific. In 1998 they added the BNSF Sweet Home branch in both Sweet Home and Albany. Their address is 1784 S. Central Oregon & Pacific

Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad operates the old Southern Pacific branches that goes from Springfield Oregon to Black Butte, California. This used to be the main Southern Pacific line from Oregon to California. They also operate the old Southern Pacific line that went from Eugene to Coquille, Oregon. City of Prineville Railroad

City of Prineville Railroad connects the Prineville Enterprise Zone to Prineville Junction of UP main line. They have 19 miles of track. Their address is 185 E. 10th, Prineville, OR 97754. Phone 541-477-6251.

Klamath Northern

Klamath Northern operates on 10.6 miles of tracks 3 times a week between Gilchrist and Chemult, Oregon. It connect with UP's main line. Address is P. O. Box 638, Gilchrist, OR 97737. Phone 541 433 2222,

Hampton Railway

Hampton Railway has no engines, but they have 824 cars and 5.2 miles of track between Willamina and Ft. Hill. The line is operated by Willamette and Pacific Railroad. Address is 9400 SW Barnes Road, Suite 400, Portland, OR 97225. Phone 503 203 6606.

Idaho Northern & Pacific

Idaho Northern and Pacific Railroad is a collection of four former UP Railroad branches over 210 miles in Idaho and NE Oregon. It operates on very steep grades and each trip is preceded by a highrail engine equipped to blow the most challenging landcape from the railway and also a large part of the year a snow plow preceding the train each trip. Lake County Railroad

This line was abandoned by Southern Pacific on 10/20/85. It is now operated by Lake County Oregon. The line is 54.45 miles long and goes between Lakeview, OR and Alturas, CA. 14.9 miles in Oregon and balance in California. At Alturas it join with Union Pacific. Palouse River & Coulee City RR/Blue Mountain Railroad

This line is run by a large railroad company (Watco Railroads) that operates in a large number of different states. Most of their tracks are in Washington but they have a short line from Walla Walla to Milton-Freewater and Weston Oregon. In the west they travel all over SE Washington and into Idaho. Address is P. Peninsula Terminal RR

This is a terminal railroad that moves cars around the North Portland yards. They have about 1 mile of track. Address 11645 N Force Ave. Portland, OR 97217. 503 285 5023.

Port Of Tillamook Bay RR

When Southern Pacific wanted to abandon the line between Tillamook, Garibaldi, Rockaway , and Wheeler the Port of Tillamook Bay received lottery funds and purchases the entire line. This line goes 88.3 miles and will take freight from the coast to Portland. They take out over 3,000 carloads each year, and have passenger service in the spring when they take people up the track when they have enough people sign up. Portland & Western RR

Genesee and Wyoming Inc. operates in Illinois, NY, Louisiana, Canada, Mexico, Bolivia, and all over Australia. In Oregon they operates as Portland and Western over 520 miles between Portland, Astoria, Willamina, Dallas Salem.Toledo, Albany, Eugene Tualatin, Beaverton, Banks etc. Each year they will move over 60,000 cars. Portland Terminal RR

White City Terminal RR

Willamette & Pacific RR

This railroad has a long term lease from Southern Pacific to run from their old line from Toledo to Newberg, Monroe, Dallas and Willamina. Also from Albany to Eugene. This is also owned by Genesee & Wyoming that owned Portland and Western Railroad (Oregon largest railroad). Willamette use 225 miles of track. Address 110 West 10th Ave. Albany, OR 97321. Willamette Valley RY

In March 1993 Willamette Valley RY took over the West Stayton branch from Southern Pacific comprising of 31.8 miles of track between Woodburn and Styton Oregon. There address P.O. Box 917 McMinnville, OR 97128. Phone 503 474 1892.

Wyoming & Colorado RR

UNUSED LINES.

There are a large number of miles in Oregon that RR tracks are down but no trains are running on them at this time. We will list them as the information comes in.

LIGHT RAIL

TRI-MET

TRI-MET runs light rail between Gresham Oregon through Portland to Hillsboro Oregon. This is more than 40 miles. They also have light rail from downtown Portland to Portland's airport. They are making a new line from downtown Portland all most to Vancouver Washington that will open next year.

STREET CARS

TRI-MET

TRI MET runs a street car between NW Portland and Portland State University. They are planing to expand to the SW section of Portland in 3 years.
