WHAT IS ON THOSE VIDEOS CONFISCATED BY CUSTOMS?

These are the videotapes of the 8th Voices in the Wilderness delegation to Iraq (Nov. - Dec. 1997) as produced by Dan Handelman. (Other members of the delegation are: Bert Sacks, Rev. Randall Mullins, and Joe Zito.) These tapes are currently in the possession of the U.S. Government pending outcome of litigation.

First tape (1:41:00)
JORDAN

1. Interviews with World Television Network (WTN) at hotel.
Loading bags of medicine onto truck for WTN and Associated Press (APTV). (Nov. 19)

2. News conference at the UN in Amman, including tape of news reporters. (Nov. 20)

3. Franciscan sisters in Amman, who state "lift the sanctions."

4. Sisters cut "business cards" for VitW while Bert Sacks talks on the phone with BBC.

5. Bert's first interview with the BBC.

6. Early morning drive to Baghdad. "Truck stop" 2 hours into drive near border. Video of a young
boy Bert wanted on tape.

7. Interview with our Iraqi driver, who speaks about the effect of sanctions on his family.

IRAQ

8. En route to Baghdad.

9. St Raphael Hospital. A doctor and a nurse (/nun) say "Lift sanctions."

10. Dan and Joe Zito explore a rusted out shell of a park by the Tigris River. (Nov. 22)

11. Iraqi kids tv show.

12. Joe counts out huge stacks of Iraqi dinars (once $3 to the dinar, dinars were 1500 to the dollar
at the time).

13. Interview with members of Physicians without Borders.

14. Iraqi Red Crescent workers make statements.

15. A visit to a family with 8 children near our hotel; Rev. Randall Mullins does some clowning.

16A. Elizabeth Deligia of Equilibre, a French campaign to restore educational materials in Iraq.

16B. Michel H. from Middle East Council of Churches interview.

16C. Michel tells a story about how sheets have to be imported whole and the sanctions committee
will not allow Iraq to import the raw linen.

Second tape (1:15:00)
IRAQ/Baghdad

1.News conference at Saddam Central Hospital for Children (?) (Nov. 24)
Inside the emergency ward, "one day" ward, pharmacy, and our reactions soon after.
Dr. Samir Kalander, Sahsan Abdullah Al-Sayyah (pharmacist) give statements.

2. Al Qadissiya Hospital. News conference. The doctors and pharmacists open the bags to inspect
them. Many shots of ailing children, including fly-ridden, beat-up old incubators.

Third tape (1:26:45)

IRAQ

Baghdad

1. APTV CNN Feed taped off television. (Probably about us)

2. Omar Juma, a reporter who exposed that the story about Iraqis smashing Kuwaiti incubators
was false and was fired.

3. Al Amariya Bomb Shelter, the target of U.S. missiles in February, 1991, in which at least 400
Iraqis perished, many burned alive. We are given a tour, and a short Q&A (Nov. 25)

4. German TV interview at the hotel.

5. The Al Rasheed Hotel, the most famous hotel in Baghdad. Signs all over read "Down America."

Basra

6. Bridges to Baghdad, a group which has established a clinic to treat malnutrition in children.
Interview with Umberto Greco. (Nov. 26?)

7. Father Kassab, Chaldean Archbishop of Basra. He shows us around his parish, including a
sewing "factory", school, medicine cabinet, chapel, and Archbishop's House.

Fourth tape (1:13:00)
IRAQ

Basra (We recovered 20 minutes from this tape when a later delegation returned with a dub.)

1. Interview with director of Basra's water bureau. (Nov. 27)

2. Basra Pediatric & Gynecological Hospital: delivery of toys, ailing children, and dark hallways.

3. Al Morfariya housing complex: raw sewage; kids surround us; people run after the Red
Crescent vehicle as we drive away; and our muddy stinky feet.

4. Raw sewage and destroyed water tank in Basra.

5. Father Kassab's families--poor families, many of them large in number, in small tiny
apartments with almost nothing in them.

6. Iraqi TV at the hotel.

Fifth tape
IRAQ (No log: I'm guessing what I have on tape based on my diary)

Interview with Eric Falt, UN Spokesperson, with details on the oil-for-food program.

People at the hotel asking America to lift sanctions.

The delegation talks about what they have seen while leaving Iraq/permissible shots of the highway.
