A Re
uters report on December 16 shows the striking difference between an
article on AIDS and its headline. It is titled, "AIDS Spreading Among
Wives in India," though the article has nothing to do with an increase in
AIDS among Indian wives. The reported study found a high rate of
HIV-positivity among monogomous wives and made the assumption that
the rate is increasing. Thus, the American researchers conclude that the
the wives have gotten HIV from their prostitute-visiting husbands and the
"cultural taboo" against discussing condoms.
We continue to sexualize the world. And what is the suggested remedy?
"Vaginal microbicidal preparations [should] be developed and distributed
to Indian women so that they can obtain some measure of control over
their risk for HIV infection."
Their own taboos kill them; Western drugs save them.
