AIDS is fundamentally a political enterprise. The biological reality of
suppressed and dysfunctional immunity lies at the center of an enormous
medical project, a project conducted by and for a massive
medical-industrial complex. Some believe that this multibillion-dollar
for-profit complex is primarily motivated by altruism, by a desire
to end the suffering of those with AIDS.
AIDS Authority believes otherwise.
We believe that both components of the medical-industrial complex, the
State and the corporate sector, conduct AIDS research, pursue treatments,
reach "scientific" conclusions, dissiminate information to the public,
regulate therapies and "give in to public pressure" regarding drug
approval and accessibility only in such ways that doing so serves
the various interests invested in the medical-industrial complex.
If any suffering in those with AIDS can be relieved as a result of
research that serves these interests, all the better (and a nation of
headlines will announce the welcome coincidence of private and public
agendas). "Treating AIDS" is the justification behind the research and
the public policy. It is not the motivation.
AIDS Authority does not see this as overtly conspiratorial, but rather it
is consistent with every other massive for-profit enterprise, from
Pentagon information about defense threats to agribusiness information
about pesticide hazards.
AIDS Authority believes it is time to do things differently.
