Music Review: Patty Larkin

Perishable Fruit

So who is this Patty Larkin woman? Folk music's not my thing; I heard of her only a few months ago, on Jane Siberry's CD A Day in the Life. Their duet on "Coming Up for Air" was really pretty. So when I came across her new CD Perishable Fruit with that song, it was worth trading some old Gary Numan CDs for.

What have we got? It's a bit of a mixed bag. From the bitter "Heart" to the sweet breathlessness of "Coming Up for Air", she seems to be on the money. It's not perfect; "Red Accordion" doesn't fit the feel of the album, while "Wolf at the Door"'s lyrics are a bit repetitious. But songs like "Pablo Neruda", "The Book I'm Not Reading", and "Rear View Mirror" tilt my thumb up.

I'm not about to go out and get more, but the tunes are good.
