From: kring@efes.physik.uni-kl.de (Thomas Kettenring) Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1992 00:47:26 GMT Newsgroups: alt.pub.dragons-inn Subject: Lifilis Kloote enters the Inn Characters Mentioned: Everybody present in the main room of the Dragons Inn (minus the more silent ones) Kadrys has just disappeared from this plane, the other Dragon Questors are in their rooms, Alfvaen, Little Rat, and Delmara have gone. But there is still a lot of activity in the Dragons Inn. Zebron Twilight the drow has come back, Dusk the raven accompanying him, and Serene the barmaid shows him the chair that has been saved for him and points to the hook at the wall where his cloak is still hanging. He seems to have new one now... Doctor Panacea and Prill have joined Cathal at his reserved table, Glysten is waiting for his six yet-unknown companions, Kyleen and Bashar Mardan are introducing themselves, the slightly translucent Kraska materialized above a table, and Miscrir the Fire Elemental Mage is fuming at the bar. Then there are all the more silent ones sitting lonely at the bar or at tables: The Jolly Roger, Corporal Dwain Delaney, Farquahr the Inconspicuous, the man in skins with the pale yellow eyes, and some others that were silent for an even longer time. And another one opens the door and comes in: your first impression is that this human thinks he is better than you. He is very tall and thin, and when you look in his face as he speaks to you, you see primarily his nostrils. (That's also true if you are taller than him.) He may be fifty years old, and he wears clothes that make him look rich. He makes you think of those hundreds of sea snails necessary to dye his purple cloak and shirt. The newcomer arrogantly glances at the room, then paces to the bar. He gives Miscrir a short stare along his wrinkled nose - he obviously resents the smoke - and addresses Rowan Littlefair, raising his voice slightly above normal, as if to make sure everybody hears him. "My name is *Lifilis Kloote*. Can you give me a room?" The innkeeper nods, pursing his lips, and Kloote, after realizing that nobody seems to have heard his name before (really nobody? that one looked directly at him just now...) throws him a jewel. "That should suffice for some days. Before retiring, I want to dine. Do you have a menu?" "Nobody wanted one till now. Say what you want, we'll see if we have it." "I see. I should have gone to Nesters Inn. Well, now I'm here. Bring me asparagus soup, salmon, then roast veal with princess beans and wild rice. And a cognac." Littlefair is a bit taken aback. What a combination! "Mary! Do we have wild rice?" "Oh yes. It's not much, for three persons perhaps." The inn- keeper gives Kloote the key to his room and adds, "Your menu will be delivered shortly." Kloote has been studying the noteboard and found Garriot's note: WANTED: A mage, cleric, or other worker of magicks capable of aiding in the recovery of lost memories. Respond here. "Recovery of lost memories? Lost persons I could recover..." He turns around and scans the room for an empty table, then takes a seat where the Dragon Questors sat a few moments ago. It seems that the Mysty Mountains are too far away for my reputation to reach this place, he thinks. Lifilis Kloote, conjurer and artist. It seems that someone left their junk here. He attempts to shove it away with the foot - , but as he touches it, he suddenly finds that he doesn't care about it, it's not important, it's Somebody Else's Problem. So he waits for his meal, ignoring the mess at his table. Littlefair appears with the soup and cleans the table, finding a message under a crumpled metal cup: "I am called away, I will join you if I can, when I can. K." "This doesn't belong to you, does it?" he asks. "No. I know nobody here who could send me messages." "Then it's for the party in search of the Dragon. I'll take charge of it. Say -" Kloote looks up from his soup. "Didn't you mention you can bring back lost persons? This would be an opportunity." "Lost Persons. Not Dragons." "Only humans?" "No! I could recover that dragon too, but it's too risky! I need to know the looks of the being in question, and if that dragon is Not Accurately Described to me, another one will be summoned. You'll understand that I don't want that. I won't do it unless they have a Very Good Image of the beast." The barkeeper frowns. "Oh yes. Then perhaps you'd like to recover Kron's sister? The party who searches for her wasn't here for quite a time, though." "If they can describe her well enough... We'll see to that." Kloote turns to the soup again, and the innkeeper returns to the bar. When the conjurer has finished his meal, he stands up and retreats to his room for the night. -- Lifilis Kloote, conjurer and artist aka Bakr ibn Ja'far ibn Musa al Mekneshi, apprentice mage aka Thomas Kettenring
