Byte Shops Northwest Newsletter

Byte Shops NW Newsletter

Published in the fall of 1981. My first regular paying job in the computer business was with this company. (now gone) The first computer store in the Pacific Northwest, located at 4th and Lincoln in downtown Portland, Oregon. The building is still there (or at least was the last time I was in that part of town) and is currently occupied by a automobile rental agency.

I've even got an article or two in this issue. Mayhaps I'll have to post the rest of it.

General Electric Information Systems: Mark I Time-Sharing Service - BASIC Language Reference Manual

GE Time Sharing System: BASIC Language Reference

Original publication: June 1965
This example published: January 1969

According to this document, the 'Mark I Time-Sharing System' was hosted on a GE-235 Computer. Does anyone have any information or pictures of this unit?

General Electric Information Systems: You and the Computer - A Student's Guide

(picture to follow)

Original publication: 1965
This example published: 1965

This document is designed as a student's initial introduction to the basic of computer technology (as it was in 1965).

I must say, when I received this document recently it was a bit of a shock as this was the first formal text that I recall ever receiving when I began my studies of computers. This, along with the 'Mark I Time-Sharing' manual shown above were my initial guides into the world of computing.

This document also includes a picture of the General Electric Model 415 computer, which I will add here shortly. It's a rather neat looking system. Sadly, this picture is as close as I ever got to one...

Hewlett Packard - 2000C: Guide to Time-Shared BASIC Manual

HP 2000C Time Sharing System: BASIC Language Reference

Original publication: April 1971
This example published: June 1972

This document indicates that the '2000C Time-Shared BASIC' system was hosted on a two computer system, with one processor handling computation and the other handling communications. In the past I did some work with this hardware configuration and heard it referred to as the '2000 Access' system. Does anyone have any more specific information as to what model of HP minicomputers comprised the system?

We will assume that the burn in this document was caused by being placed against a hot component since we all know that IBM service engineers never smoked on duty!
