Studio recordings of the artists you heard live at Joshua Tree 2000 Didjeridu Festival.

Even if you didn't attend the festival, you've no doubt heard about the wonderful performances turned in by the various artists from around the world. A live recording often doesn't do justice to the composition and execution of material. In other words, being there and having a recording of being there are not the same thing. But still, the music would be nice to own. Well I have good news for you. I've recently reviewed an advance copy of the Joshua Tree 2000 CD and the quality of the recordings is much higher than could be collected from a DAT hooked into the stage mixer. That is because none of the tracks were recorded live at the fest. It's performers that played at the fest, but the CD material was mostly recorded at Peter Spoecker's studio and partly recorded and mixed at Clive Wright's studio. Some material was recorded in a natural cave in Joshua Tree National Park (the cut of Phillip  Peris and Grahm Doe). Allen Smith did his two cuts entirely in his own studio in Tucson. Charlie McMahon sent his cuts from Australia. Event sound engineer Steve Lester did the mastering for the whole album.

Production of the CD took 6 months to finish and the results are wonderful. Without hitting on all the tracks, I would like to highlight a couple of compositions which I found particularly great. Charlie McMahon has a way with rhythm and breath like no other. While the track "Swarm" is a tribute to his constant reinvention of himself, the track Sandy Blight Junction is so sweeping and beautiful it is easy to see why Charlie remains in a class by himself. I've spoke, in previous issues about the talents of Allen and Audrey Smith and they are quite evident in their contribution, "Eazy". For those of you who already own "Thunder Down Under"  I need not say more about the combination of Peter Spoecker and Brent Lewis which is beyond tight. When they come together, it's classic grooves with unexpected melodic trance overtones. Phillip Peris has long been a favorite of mine for his ability to make a stick really "sing" and sing beautifully from his heart to yours.

This disc makes a wonderful addition to any collection and one which will have you reaching for your own stick often. Because it is not a live recording, several artist who performed at JT2000 are sadly absent. Also, because of the diversity of the performers, it lacks a coherent theme. Nonetheless, much thought has been put into the track sequencing to make it listenable and coherent as a audio document of the event. JT200 is a solid value and a must for your collection. And it will have you looking forward to JT2001 which already is featuring a star packed line up.
