"War in Iraq: Why Now and at What Cost?"

Teach-in at Portland State University

Saturday, December 7, 2002, 1 PM-5 PM

There will be a teach-in titled "War in Iraq: Why Now and at What Cost?" to be held at Portland State University's Shattuck Hall on Saturday, December 7. It will begin with a panel discussion at 1 PM to be followed by break-out sessions at 2:45 (see schedule, below). The event is currently being co-sponsored by the PSU Middle East Studies Center and the Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group. The forum will be in Shattuck Hall, Room 212 at SW Broadway and Hall St.

Tentatively scheduled for the panel discussion are the topics: Middle East context--how will the war affect the region?; How the United Nations fits in; What are the U.S. interests in going to war; an Iraqi perspective, and Environmental/health effects of war.

Breakout sessions will include a presentation by Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility on The Health Effects of War, analysis of U.S. foreign policy, and issues of stereotyping and civil liberties in times of war.

Endorsers of this event include: Portland Peaceful Response Coalition, Women in Black, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, Peace and Social Concerns Committee of the Multnomah Monthly Meeting (Quakers), Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility, War Resisters League/Portland, Oregon PeaceWorks, the Rearguard, and PSU Progressive Student Union.
