The Sharp-tailed Grouse Tours have been lead by Laurence Hoover for about 10 years now, on behalf of the Wainwright Wildlife and Conservation Society. These tours visit the Canadian Forces Base/Area Support Unit Wainwright and have their full cooperation. This area of northeastern Alberta has highest density and counts of breeding Sharp-tailed Grouse in the province. Although habitat removal is a problem for Sharp-tails throughout the southern portions of their extensive range, the protection they receive on Wainwright Base is sufficient to allow a well-regulated hunt in the late summer/fall. However, the spring is reserved for viewing. And the views from the Wildlife Society blinds are outstanding.
