Warbirds Turning Performance Charts

The Warbirds Turn Performance Charts compare the turning abilities between the Warbird's planes.

Corner Velocity Max G turns were done like this: Load each plane with 10 minutes worth of fuel. Accelerate to Corner Velocity, as found in the G Limits Study. Pull a max-g left turn, time first 180 and 360 degree turns.

The methodology used for the sustained turn rate was: Load each plane with 10 minutes worth of fuel. Turn max-g for 1.5 circles at full power (no wep) to stabilize speed. Hit WEP and time 1 circle. Lower flaps at each degree allowable, timing 1 360 each. Record no flap/full flap speeds, and record best turn (if two flap settings resulted in similar times, the one with the slower speed was used, as this means a smaller turning radius). Record speed of best turn rate.

The instantaneous turn rates model starting a turn fight at a certain speed (corner is usually best), how quickly one can get around. The sustained times are for into the fight, after both planes have burned all excess E, the faster sustained turn rate is going to gain ground on the slower. Instantaneous turn rate helps for tracking a breaking target, and for turning speed into position. E fighters use Instantaneous turn, Turn 'n' Burn fighters use Sustained turn more. BnZ fighters can use these charts to know how much E (approximately) they will burn when turning (against breaking opponent, pulling up from a dive, etc).

The methodology used for the max-g 360 degree (non-corner) turn time was: Load each plane with 10 minutes worth of fuel. Accelerate to 250mph. Time two full max-g 360 degree turns, marking time for 1 circle, then 2. Repeat for 300mph.

Where planes had difficulty to turn at 300mph (or 250mph) the plane was omitted from that speed for that altitude. For altitudes below 15k, a dive from higher altitude to gain the desired speed was performed for planes unable to accelerate in level flight to a particular speed.

One use for instantaneous vs sustained turns is to determine, in a circlefight, who will get first post-merge shot (180 degrees traveled), who will get 2nd post-merge (360 degrees travelled) shot, then who will eventually outturn the other (sustained turn).

Note that turn rate is different than turn radius, and some planes with good turn rates have poorer turn radii compared to planes they outturn in rate (spit vs 109, spit vs p38l, 109G6R6 vs Fw190A4, etc). Turn radius is directly related to the turn rate and the square of the speed, so two planes with the same turn rate the one with the higher speed will have a larger radius than the plane with the lower speed.
