Information

Meteor, Custom, S33...."But what does it all mean, Bassel?" The Custom is a trim package, similar to the Fairlane's 500 series, and the S33 is the sport model, similar to the Fairlane's Sport Coupe (or the Comet S22 or Montery S55). Still confused? Here's the differences to the best of my knowledge. I'm only familar with the '62 models, but I would presume that the same would hold for '63 as well. The custom's most notable difference is the addition of the "washboard" trim on the bottom of the quarter panels behind the rear wheels. This can be seen on pictures on this site, the base model or "non-custom" has no trim below the long strip that passes over the wheel opening, behind the rear tires. The Custom has a "Custom" badge on the fenders just below the "Meteor" script. The Custom looks to have taller roof pillar trim as well. I'm not certain if it's related to the Custom package or not, but I suspect that the trim holding the door panel in place is chrome on the Custom, painted on the base model. Another item that may have been an option, but may have been related to the Custom package, is the use of full wheel covers vs. smaller hubcaps. The S33 is basicly a Custom but with a pair of bucket seats and a center console in place of the bench seat. The "Custom" badge on the fenders is also replaced with an "S33" badge, and the hubcabs have red, white, and blue centers vs. the plain stainless used on the other models. Otherwise, I don't know of anything different about the S33. I believe come Comets and maybe other models used special trim pieces or added extra chrome, this wasn't the case on the Meteor, at least in '62. All models came with the same engine options and column shift transmissions, instead of the proforance options you'd expect in a Super Sport or similar sport-model vehicle.
